New Delhi, February 20 The tragic story of ‘Goltu’, who lost his parents within a span of hours, got a new twist on Wednesday when driver of the Blueline bus that ran over his father offered to adopt him. His uncle, Mastul, though, left for home — in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal — with the three-month-old boy. Mastul took the Brahmaputra Express from Old Delhi railway station late Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, Ramesh Chander, the driver of the bus, had said, “I am really sorry for what has happened. I will support the child in any way. I will even adopt the child as I do not have any children.”

Chander had run over Goltu’s father Aukhid Ali on Sunday evening. Unable to overcome the grief, the baby’s mother, Dalia Biwi, hanged herself inside an AIIMS toilet the following day.

Mastul told Newsline: “We can look after my brother’s child. There is no question of giving the baby to the bus driver responsible for this situation. This is ridiculous. The baby is ours and is going back home.”

Lalita Alexander of the AIIMS trauma centre, who nursed the baby following Biwi’s suicide, said she has been counselling Mastul and his companion who will take the child back home. “They are also young; they do not know how to tend to a baby,” Alexander said. “I counselled them on when to feed the baby, and how to hold him.”
