New Delhi Kingfisher Airlines has applied for permission with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to directly import jet fuel to lower operational costs.

The commerce ministry is likely to take a decision in the next two-three days, without holding consultations with the states, which have so far shown reluctance in bringing down sales tax. Kingfisher, going through a tough financial patch, asked the government to show “sense of urgency” on its request.

“It would not take more than three to four days....The decision is fairly in advanced stage. The consultation has been completed with the stakeholders,” Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Anup K Pujari said.

He added that the government is examining three options to change the policy: removing monopoly of state enterprises to import aviation turbine fuel (ATF); to permit only the applicant to import ATF; or to allow it to all those who apply.

Kingfisher wants to import ATF, to help save on high sales taxes imposed by state governments. Pujari said the government has not consulted state governments “..because we know they will not approve it”.
