Kisan Mela concludes

Ludhiana, March 14 Presiding over the concluding function of the Kisan Mela at Punjab Agricultural University today, Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang said that PAU will launch an aggressive mealy bug awareness campaign, and devise steps for the control of this menace in the cotton belt of Punjab.

Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans was honoured for his contribution for promoting Punjabi culture through folk songs. He also sang a few of his favourite songs that mesmerized the audience.

Director of Extension Education Dr NS Malhi called upon farmers to adopt various water management technologies.

In crop produce competitions, 28 first prizes and an equal number of second prizes were awarded to farmers in different categories.

Gurdev Kaur from Ayali Khurd (Ludhiana) was adjudged as the best woman entrepreneur. Tirath Kaur from Aur (Nawanshehar) got the second position in this category. In the various competitions for rural women, Tajinder Kaur from Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, won the first prize in crocheting; Pinky from Sudhar (Ludhiana) got the first prize for prantha making. Gursimran Kaur from Barewal (Ludhiana) won the first prize for decorating shagun envelopes. In the creative competition for children, Karan from Dugri (Ludhiana) was the winner.

In the inputs group, six firms were given the best stall awards. They included IFFCO, Ludhiana (fertilizer); UPL, Mumbai (pesticides); Dilkash Traders, Ludhiana (home appliances); Markfed, Chandigarh (agro processed products); Mehram Publication, Nabha (literature) and SBI, Ludhiana.

PAU Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology was awarded first prize for best display in agro industrial exhibition. The Department of Agronomy and Department of Soils bagged the second and third prize respectively. In the field demonstration, Vegetable Department was adjudged the best. The Zoology and Plant Pathology were placed second and third respectively.

In the category of sale of farm literature of the university, the first prize was bagged by FASS and KVK, Bathinda and second prize by KVK Goniana, Mukatsar.

Dr Satpal Mehra, Additional Director Extension Education, proposed the vote of thanks.
