Kolkata, March 20 As Kolkata gears up to celebrate three festivals over the next two days — Holi, Prophet Mohammad’s birth anniversary and Good Friday — security has been strengthened especially in and around bathing ghats.

While some play with colours, others will pay visits to churches and mosques to pray on the holy occasion.

To make the celebrations trouble-free, the Kolkata police is prepared to meet any emergency. Police pickets will be installed in 300 places. Mobile patrolling will be conducted in areas like Mominpur, Garden Reach and Raja Bazar areas.

“We have arranged for 200 mobile vans, which will patrol the entire city to keep a vigil on the situation,” said Vineet Goyel, DC (Headquarters).

But the police seem to have failed to keep track of the bulk of gulal and other colours on sale in almost all every nook and corner of the city. Compared to the herbal products of Jadavpur University’s Chemical Engineering department, these roadside colours are cheaper.

The cost of 10 gms of organic colour is five times more than the abir being sold on the footpaths.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s control room will remain open 24X7. “There will be ample number of officers of the emergency departments of water supply and health to tackle any situation,” said Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.

But the ophthalmic and the dermatology section of the state-run hospitals have not equipped themselves to serve the public. No special arrangements have been made in the emergency sections of the hospitals in case of any emergency situation.
