Kolkata, April 4 Heavy rains lashed Kolkata and its suburbs on Thursday night, bringing down temperatures by a few notches. The Meteorological department said the sudden rain that caught Kolkatans unawares was not caused due to any depression.

“This is the season of Nor’westers and Thursday’s rain was a result of the formation of convective clouds over a certain area,” said G C Debnath, director, Regional Meteorological Centre.

In Nadia district, lightening claimed two lives, while Midnapore experienced hailstorms.

The rain caused inconvenience to Kolkata’s schoolchildren and office-goers on Friday. It stopped by 10 am, but the sky remained overcast for the rest of the day.

With the weatherman predicting partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm for both Saturday and Sunday, residents will have to spend the weekend at home.

Kolkata recorded 50.7 mm of rain in the last 24 hours with the maximum temperature remaining two degrees below normal at 34.3 degree Celsius. The maximum temperatures for the next two days will remain between 25 and 30 degrees, according to the Met office.
