"While Christians and Hindus have co-existed peacefully in the state, there have been unconstitutional and illegal efforts by some Christian organisations such as 'New Life' to forcibly convert or to induce conversion to Christianity," he said, addressing National Integration Council meeting in New Delhi.
"Efforts of such organisation include publishing booklets like 'Satya Darshini' in which Hindu gods and goddesses were denigrated. Our constitution provides for freedom of religion but does not permit forcible or induced conversion," he said.
He also criticised some Union ministers and alleged political vendetta. "It was very unfortunate that our state was targeted for political vendetta by ministers and officials of the Government of India," he said.
He stressed that there was no need to send central advisories or rush a team to Karnataka in the aftermath of attacks on minorities.
"There have been serious communal and terrorists activities in other states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Tripura, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. The Union government was not so active in sending advisory notes, at times touted as notices (under article 355) to the states," he added.
The Karnataka CM claimed that "due to immediate steps by the state government, peace and normalcy was restored in the affected areas."
Meanwhile Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Orissa, which also witnessed communal attacks against minorities in its Kandhamal district, said the clashes had occurred due to conflict of interest in land rights and employment opportunities.
"On account of conflict of interest in the matter of land rights, employment opportunities and religion, there were clashes between communities," Patnaik said.
He added that the situation was brought under control and the state government has announced a slew of measures to facilitate harmonious and speed up socio-economic development of different communities living in the district.

Sir,When the Pope visited India,he gave a call for "A Harvest of Faith". A very harvest of faith is going on with added vigour.There is nothing wrong with a person choosing his own line of faith,be it another religion or even Atheism.This is a matter of individual choice,but to "harvest Faith " from poor,helpless and illiterate men and women will merely increase the numbers in a demographic statistic,a mere information.When the Lord talked about Sheep and Shepherd,it was in a metaphorical context,and not treating people as sheep to be herded into a new pen or a religion.Yes ,it is heartening and divine to offer shelter,food and a better life ,but there should be no quid pro quo ,otherwise the excercise will remain plain forced proselytism.And pray tell me,by anyone who knows the matter well,will these so converted be treated as equal members of the Church with the right to be given a parishioner's status in life and after,like social equality and burial in Church Cemetery?

When poor dalits and tribals starve, nobody bothers. If the people who are readily converting to Christianity, help these dalits or whoever, without converting them to their own religion, then that would be a class act, of really doing something selfless for these people. But if there is conversion on the agenda, then its a no brainer.

Sir,The claims of the sangh parivar and their Karnataka/ Orissa CM's that Christians are responsible for the unrest and there are forced conversion done by Christians are hollow. The forced conversions are done by VHP and Bajrang Dal in Orissa now. Thousands of Christians are hiding in the forests unable to retrun if they are no converted to Hinduism. The root cause is economy. if the SAngh parivar sees that any other persons except Hindus are prospering in a place they are up in arms against them.They carry tridents and swords and kill innocent people and rape nuns. Why this outfit should not be banned and their leaders put behing bars? The hate propaganda of these groups must be stopped. The Maoists killed the swami in Orissa, and Christians are massacred for that. what justis is this? There was not a single case of forced conversion in Karnataka. then why the churches are attacked. It is part of BJP's political game plan for the electoins.It is political not religious.
I find strange that the chief minister has done nothing to arrest the printers and publishers of satyadarshini and has not filed a single case against forcible conversion in the state inspite of being in authority. What prevents him in getting at least one case filed and take it to logical conclusion would have strengthened his party's case
There is no end to such fights if there are people like you. Do you think what was circulated by New Life was correct. Does Christian religion teach people to show other Gods in poor light. Why don't you condemn it ? This is as barbaric and henious as the attacks on the Christians by some elements. We all have freedom to practice our own religion. But whay do Chrstian missionaries convert poor people ? If they care so much for the downtrodden they can do some social service without hurting sentiments of other religions. Why don't these Christian organisations try and convert Muslims ? Try doing that and they will be lynched. No doubt about that.
Conversions must stop at the first hand to avoid such violence. Where as I condemn nay sort of violence to vent ire , I also urge to look into the root cause behind that is leading to such acts of violence. It is a well known fact that the missionaries aided with foreign funds are all out in their agenda to harvest souls in India. They employ if not coercive , semi coercive methods ,emotional blackmail, so called faith healing which does nt have any scientific logic and abuse of Hindu gods to convert the gullible innocent masses.I have studied in convent and I really value the quality education I had but the saddest fact remians that there were definite attempts by the missionaries for conversion. They subtly try to make you feel ashamed of being what you are .If they really want to service the poor, why they cannot do it without intefering with the faith of the people. No these conversionist are not soft. They exercise tremendous money, muscle, political and unethical practices (like giving a paracetamol to cure headhache and telling the tribals that it is a blessing from Christ) powers. You have to be in those areas to know the reality. They are the anti-thesis of what Christ stood for. Lord Christ, give them wisdom. This is not to condone the attacks on any community. God, give the perpetuators of voilence against any community the wisdom to think of love, compassion and peace.
The activities of these new found christian organizations (like new life) are turning truly secular hindu minds to take up a more hardline attitude. VHP/BD does not need to do that job anymore.Just 5 years back in my village (coastal Karnataka), no one talked about religion. Now every adult (of course, Hindu) strongly believes that these Christian organization should be stopped....... in any possible way. Media will print what people want. And I am sure, in some time Indian media will more openly reflect the people's view more than what the pseudo secular politicians opine......call it the Market force.
Peculiarities,superstitions,un-scientific beliefs,aberrations,etc. are aplenty in any religion. With modern education and amalgamation of various societies majority are changing their mindset but religious fundamentalists, who have a vested control over places of worship etc stoke communal fires. If an analysis of the scriptures of all religions is dispassionately made, we will come across beliefs and admonitions repugnant to civilised society whatever the original intentions and times in which context they were laid. Religion is not personal but faith is. Glossing over of faith by religion is the root cause for present turmoil in India. If we publish books detailing the aberrations or beliefs of other religions, there can only be mayhem. Religious denominations should ponder on this. I feel the cause for the present turmoil is the sudden aggressive moves to swell numbers and the resultant reaction. Economic disparities add to the woes.
It is sad that Secularists are drifting away from Hindu positions so swiftly and surely that they may find themselves in a point of no return situation so soon that they may lose out on the broader political arena. With regard to Orissa, the crux of the matter was explained by the leader of killer gang himself - that reconversions are not acceptable to Christians and therefore Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati was murdered. If reconversoins are not acceptable to Christians, then conversions are absolutely not acceptable to Hindus! In the case of Karnataka, the Central government behaves as if the offensive publications never existed, and there was no cause for communal disturbance !!While Hindus see a sustained and organized campaign to convert as a menace to spiritual freedom and liberty. Secularists better realize this and not dismiss it under the VHP/BD brand. If the Secularists do not heed to sane advice and take right action, they will lose in the next elections!!
Whenever anybody does or says anything that hurts the sentiments of the minority then there is always someone taking notice. It is sad that things have to come to this before anyone takes notice of the conversions that have happened. The most basic question is still the same, if everyone believes in One God then why should anyone be converted forcefully? In India it is a sin to stand up for being a hindu. The chief minister here is calling a spade a spade. There are good Christians, just as there are good Muslims and good Hindus. But all self respecting people will stand up for their own religion if it is questioned. It cannot be right for one person and wrong for another. Our hindu religion may have its loop holes and have the stupid caste system but because it has been so tolerant there have been people from so many religions in India today. The minorities does not have to convert the whole country to their religion. We can all co exist , but give respect to all religions.
Please note India was tolerant country because bramins or the upper caste are not the Majority community. Now they are emotionally black mailing the lower caste hindus and pitching them aginst christians and mulims and watching the fun.

Weak BJP leadershipFanatical Hindu organisations are luring gullible people for their violent activities . As what happened in Islam where violent organisations have taken over the leadership over moderate elements, the same history is repeating in Hinduism. When Vajpayee was in full control the moderate elements of BJP had the upper hand and BJP became popular. But now with the leadership of Hindu fanatical organisations taking over, BJP is is singing the same tune as them and their violent elements are having a field day.There seems to be no real strong leadership in BJP which can give it a national character.
Yeddy's Karnataka is a special case. All other states did not have the following conditions. In Karnataka there was joint operations between the Police and Bajrang Dal in attacking Kulshekara church and caning praying innocent women and children for a few guilty stone throwers. It brought to mind the Nazi Philosophy of Heydrich Reinhard Reichsprotektor (Reich Protector) 'It is better to hang a hundred too many innocent men than to allow one guilty too few to get away'. There are video clips to this effect on the net. Secondly Conversions are repeated Gobbellsian like several times but no cases recorded in police stations or courts of law (real or imagined) to prove him right. Thirdly assuming 'Satya Darshini' did not come out of the sangh parivar press, does not this government have a potent police force or courts of law to deal with this situation? Why are we creating jobs for the uneducated and unemployed to put their skills to use instead of the porcesses of law taking due course?
