Colombo Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Friday virtually conceded that its de-facto capital Kilinochchi has fallen to the Sri Lankan Army, saying that the security forces have entered a "virtual ghost town" as the whole infrastructure of Tamil Tigers have shifted to the northeast.

Hours after President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced to the nation that the rebel-stronghold has been captured by the security forces, the LTTE said that they had put up heavy resistance so far and kept their causalities to the minimum.

Pro-LTTE Tamilnet quoted sources close to Tamil Tigers saying that the rebels have put up "heavy resistance".

The Sri Lankan Army has entered a virtual ghost town (Kilinochchi) as the whole infrastructure as well as the centre of the LTTE had shifted further to northeast. This is the first time after a decade the Sri Lankan forces have been able to take control of the town after several months of fierce fighting has claimed hundreds of people on both sides of the war.

Twelve years ago, the Army captured the Kilinochchi-Paranthan area from the LTTE after fighting for more than a month in 1996. The Tigers' recaptured part of the town in February 1998.

LTTE is a terrorist organisation by Senthil Rama on 04 Jan 2009

Good riddance to LTTE. They are good for nothing and a terrorist organisation. I as an Indian Tamil would like to see LTTE crushed and defeated. They have only brought miseries for the Srilankan Tamils on a basis of a fake promise. of Eelam. Srilankan Tamils should join the mainstream and be peaceful. Hats off to the Sri Lankan Army for their bravery.

Bravery? by UGK on 04 Feb 2009

SL bravery? SL army has the world record for highest number of deserters in the world. Dosent sound like bravery to me. SL is firing long range missiles and killinf civilians. That is not bravery at all

Tamils will win by John Paul on 03 Jan 2009

It is black day for Tamil history as millions of Tamils watch and people like Karunanithi, Jayalalitha shed cocadile tears as SLA coninues the genocidical Bombing of Tamil areas of Elam. Pranbs and Thangabalus will not understand the pain the Tamils are undergoing in hearing the sorry plight fo thousands of displaced Tamil bretheren. Many like me are willing for the supreme sacrifice for the free land of Elam where Tamil can live with honour for the sinhala will never grant this to tamils. We will fight for the glory of Tamil for ever.

Tamils have already won by Nuthara on 06 Jan 2009

SL Tamils have already won a part of their freedom, bcuz SL forces are clearing the North of Sri Lanka. No sooner the forces finish the blood thirsty LTTEs, SL Tamils will have the full freedom, not only Tamils, but all Sri Lankans. DONT FORGET, the majority Tamils live peacefully in the rest of the Island.

Solve the problem by Ramakrishnan on 03 Jan 2009

The capture of territoy is no great deal. Organisations like LTTE do not depend on holding on to territory. If pushed beyond a point they would go underground which would make it more difficult to fight. If minorityism has been the bane of Indian politics, majorityism appears to be the bane of Srilanka politics. Srilanka will do well to provide a level playing field to their minorities to bring a lasting solution to the ethnic problem.
