The attack on the Sri Lankan team by a dozen heavily armed terrorists, which killed eight persons and injured over 20, including seven team members, would hit sports hard as no foreign team would now be willing to tour Pakistan ‘for a very long time’, the dailies lamented.
‘Mumbai terror visits Lahore’, read the headline of a story in the influential Dawn newspaper, whose editorial regretted that the attack had proved that even the ‘most esteemed guests are no longer safe in this country’.
"Assured of security, Sri Lanka chose to play in Pakistan when the cricketing world at large saw us as a pariah state. They chose to play in a country whose very mention invokes images of most gruesome violence imaginable in the minds of most foreigners," the editorial said.
‘The News’, in its editorial titled ‘Cricket, the requiem’, said the only thing that anyone could be sure of was that whoever attacked the cricket team ‘did not arrive by boat’.
Touching on the blame game after the attack, including suggestions of an Indian involvement, it said: "There is no shortage of highly competent, well-armed and trained groups within our own borders capable of such an operation".
While paying tribute to the policemen who saved the Sri Lankans, the Dawn's editorial said, "a security lapse did occur, officialdom's denials notwithstanding".
Referring to peace talks with Taliban in the Swat valley, it said that the assault highlights ‘the folly of negotiating with those bent on destroying with our way of life’.
Many in the Sri Lankan team were probably regretting the decision, the newspaper added.
Contending that no Pakistani militant or terrorist organisation bears a grudge against Sri Lanka, the editorial suggested that the attack was carried out by internal or external elements who wish to either destabilise the Pakistan government or to further isolate it internationally.
Noting that Tuesday's attack was carried out by individuals who have ‘received highly sophisticated combat training’, the ‘Dawn’ said their ‘approach was not dissimilar to that adopted by the Mumbai gunmen. Perhaps the same organisation is to blame for both tragedies’.
‘The News’ termed it ‘a carefully planned and executed attack, carried out by people who knew what they were doing, and who appear to have been well armed’.
Pointing out that within minutes a PPP politician told a private TV channel that 'this is clearly work of a foreign hand' the edit said, Pakistani militants ‘have no need of foreign assistance or money there are plenty of people here happy to finance them and offer logistical support’.

We have seen some Irresponsible Statement made by Pakistan that Indian hand in Lahore attack. We have been watching yesterday in almost all channels, CCTV Camera footage shows how Lahore attackers escaped cooly in bikes and 3 people went by walk freely. It was clear evident that local people only did this crime. Pakistan Govt wrongly diverting the issue. Till yesterday, I personally had great respect to Mr.Imran Khan as a Cricket Fan. But his Interview to NDTV since past two days (commenting foreign hand in Lahore attack) shows clearly that he is a literate fool and No.1 idiot. He donot know head and tile what he speaks. Now, the only choice for US / UN is either to declare Pakistan as Terrorist Country or US / UK / India to Bombard Pakistan so that Terrorists activity can be stopped completely
Just like the world was unified against apartheid in South Africa, a similar boycott is the need to isolate the Pakistanis for their export of terror. Until they are isolated to rot by themselves, nothing seems will ever change these hardened criminals against humanity.
It is hightime all international community to concentrate on the DRUG smuggling part of the terrorism. The arms are used by the terrorists for gaining control over the routes to transport drugs to various parts of the world. There have been instances in the past when ships of LTTE were used by LeT militants to smuggle drugs through sea routes being attacked by US marines in Arabian Sea.
Pak cricket captain is lamenting that foreign teams will avoid touring and youth with no goals will join the ranks of terrorists. Why not dismantle all this jihadist schools and impart some real education for a change? This is a creation of the Pak political/military system over the years that is coming back to bite. I think it's high time that the polilties of the region exuded some sanity, stopped playing the blame game and get to the find ways to root out this problem. The PPP politician sounded like a confused schoolboy when he said that there's a foriegn hand in the attack moments after the attack. The general public is not so dumb dude. An international level consortium must be formed to deal with the territorial problems that are being faced by the entire South Asia and weed out this nonsense once and forever.
Cricketer Mr Broad has already condemned the pakistan security he said when terrorist attacked all the security personnel flew all possible directions and they appeared after terrosist fled the scene . It is really sad but not surprising to see this happening in pakistan. You cannot have an open gun culture and expect to have a heaven for living. Pakistan today is a living hell, almost every household has a gun. The reason is secutiry, every one feels so insecure so much so that each one has to buy a gun. In some places there are guns available easily, no license required. Under these circumstances there can only one type of sport which is bombing. They can chose to have the best bombers, the best terrorist and the most criminal outfit by activity. The joke is they think that these barbaric acts will give them heaven. The patterns between Mumbai and Lahore incidents appear to be different. In the case of Mumbai incident, all the ten terrorists were from the fedayeen squad and were willing to die. In Lahore incident that was not the case. Compared to the Mumbai incident the number of people killed in Lahore were also far less considering the amount of ammunition the terrorists carried with them according to Pakistan media. The terrorists also ran away from the scene without putting up much fight with the Pakistani Security forces. Considering all these facts, it could be an insider work just to warn the civilian administration that they can strike any where at their will. Pakistan has several people like Hamid Gul who really doesn't want Pakistan to have a friendly relationship with India. It is definitely an inside work carried out with the support of ISI and its affiliates.
Condemn the act, not the person.
It is heartening to note that Pakistani media is on the dot and not taken in by the usual pakistani habit of tit for tat. The attack on Srilankan players was very sad and tragic and harmful for Pakistani cricket. Though the establishment took no time to blame India for it, yet the fact remains that the motive of attackers is unclear. It could be to destablise the civilian govt to enable the militray to stage a comeback. It could also be to send a clear message that notwithstanding a peace treaty, Taliban are bent upon capturing power all over Pakistan. A power that sees all entertainment-films, music, art, sculpture as corrrupting and women educating themselves or playing a public role degrading. Even if India were involved, which seems highly unlikely, it would not have targeted SriLankans against whom it has no grudge. However, the possibility of LTTE befriending Taliban to take revenge against Srilankans following the former's rout around Jaffna can not be ruled out.
