New Delhi President Pratibha Patil on Sunday accepted the resignation of Union Ministers Anbumani Ramadoss and R Velu, who stepped down after their party PMK in Tamil Nadu quit the UPA, and asked Minister of State Panabaka Lakshmi to look after the health department.

The President has accepted the resignation of Ramadoss as Health Minister and Velu as Minister of State for Railways, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said.

The President has asked Panabaka Lakshmi to look after the Health and Family Welfare Ministry as Minister of State with Independent charge, the spokesperson said.

Lakshmi had been serving as Minister of State in the Health Ministry.

Ramadoss and Velu had on Saturday evening resigned from the government, two days after their party decided to switch-over to AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The PMK had said on Thursday it would join the AIADMK-led front in Tamil Nadu, accusing the ruling DMK in the state of humiliatingits party cadres.

Ressignation by PMK ministers. by Kanu Kamdar on 30 Mar 2009

This is a good thing. Will it be a precedent for Lalu and LSD President Paswan to step down? They have left UPA and so should resign. This is a democracy and PM should throw dismiss them if he is in control of thingsKanu Kamdar

Anbumani Exit by Latha on 29 Mar 2009

It is a great relief that Anbumani Ramadoss has finally come out the health department. During his tenure he did nothing except fighting Dr.Venugopal on filmsy grounds and closing many public sector drug manufacturing units to benefit the Private sector. Even though his father Ramdoss had decided to fall at the feet of Jeyalalitha long back, he kept postponing the same so that Anbumani could remain as the Cabinet Minister as long as possible. The Congress should never encourage such good for nothing allies in future.

Anbumani Exit by Subramanian on 30 Mar 2009

I am not sure whether congress will not do the same thing and if that is the case they should ask the resignations of Laluji and Paswanji

Role model by Sandeep on 29 Mar 2009

Wow, that fatso as our acting health minister? Does she know anything about good nutrition and virtues of physical exercise that are the bedrock of a healthy existence? Talk about role models...

Yes :) by Jojo on 30 Mar 2009

Good comment. The health minister appears to be in severe need of a healthy tip. Here is one- GET IN SHAPE!

HEALTH MINISTER by Thomas K.A. on 29 Mar 2009

No doubt Lakshmi is a healthy Minister. We can recognise from her very own looks and stature.
