It said efforts will be made to form a government without support of the Congress, which, it accused of being responsible for uncertainty in previous non-Congress and non-BJP regimes.
The Marxist party, which is spearheading the Third Front initiative, saw "most of the parties" in the UPA and "a few" in the BJP-led NDA as its natural allies post-poll. Leaders like Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, M Karunanidhi and Ram Vilas Paswan as also Nitish Kumar are "under pressure" from their ranks to go for an alternative policy direction, CPM Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said.
"I am in a political battle. My aim is to form a non-Congress, non-BJP government. In the midst of the battle asking what I will do if I am defeated...I am not going to entertain such questions," Yechury said in an interview.
Yechury's response was to a question as to whether it was possible for the Left parties to support a Congress government without Manmohan Singh, whom they have accused of "betrayal" on the issue of the Indo-US nuclear deal.
The Left leader said that efforts will be made to form a government without support of the Congress which it alleged was responsible for uncertainty in previous non-Congress, non-BJP governments. At the same time, he said, all depends upon numbers.
Yechury visualised the beginning of the consolidation of the undivided Socialist Party after the elections, obviously referring to the coming together of the two Yadav leaders as also Paswan. Incidentally, the erstwhile Socialist Party was known for its 'anti-Congressism'.
The Marxist leader appreciated the BJP for following up the CPM's issue of getting back the illegal Indian money stashed in banks abroad but made it clear that "there is no common ground" with that party which is the "political arm" of the RSS.
He foresaw a realignment of political forces after elections, saying regional parties were being pushed by its rank and file to shift away from the policies pursued by the Congress.
Yechury also sought to dismiss suggestions from detractors of the Third Front that it will collapse like a pack of cards with many of its constituents going in for greener pastures if the results are not in its favour.
Asked as to what was the Left's political message to the Congress with whose coalition its parting of ways was a bitter affair, he said, "you cannot have a situation where you agree to something because you want the support to form the government. ...Once the government is formed, you cannot go violating it (Common Minimum Programme)."
The message was apparently aimed at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with whom it was not on best of terms when the Left withdrew support to the government last year on the Indo-US nuclear deal issue.
Yechury disagreed with the view that the issue of Prime Ministerial candidate would be the Achilles heel of the Third Front in view of a number of ambitious leaders in its ranks.
He said that there was "no shortage of competent people" in their fold to become the Prime Minister.
"There are a large number of people (to become Prime Ministers). There is no shortage of competent people, we have people who have served in the past (as Prime Minister), we have chief ministers of larger states," Yechury said.
At the same time, he assailed both the UPA and the NDA for showing "disrespect" to the system of Parliamentary democracy by announcing Prime Ministerial candidates.
He claimed both the UPA and NDA were "disintegrating" and the "final act of theatre begins after May 16" when the results are out.
Asked about parties' chances in its strongholds, Yechury said that it would be "very difficult" to repeat the record of winning 19 seats out of 20 in Kerala.
He suggested that in West Bengal, the party would play the development card to the hilt to keep the Congress- Trinamool alliance on the defensive.

Yes ,Mr yechuri rightly said that many regional parties would come together after election to form a new govt under the banner of Third front. It is fact that cong had betrayed the left by signing the deal with USa though cong was well known about the fact that left has a uncompromising stand on the issue of imperialism. But was not cong arrogant enough to defy left with cash forvote approach? Cong has scant regard for coalition DHARMA and hence they should be taught a lesson in the forthcoming election. Left would certainly win ina impressive way in the coming LS election at W.B. and other state. Our media never projected left as a possible winner in any election and only paint a gloomy picture for left. Our federal character is safe only when Third front comes to power. Both Cong
SITARAM YECHURY, my brother, is in the day dream on the so called “THIRD FRONT” to come to power. If some shortage is there he wants to woo the “Yadavs”. These Yadavs are very clever; they will join hands with Congress only where; they know that they can be surely in power may be with more bargain. It is historical mistake for left parties to dissociate with UPA (though on out side support). What is the THIRD FRONT? All are indecisive and untrustable members. In an opportunity, it not impossible to migrate for TDP and Jaya towards NDA, "with in or out" with their clear bargain. The case may be with TRS may also be same, as they hope that they may get their Telangana. Only the left out will be Communists and Maya and the spent force Mr. Gowda. In this Maya is also untrustable with her past track record. So, what is the THIRD FRONT except Left? The THIRD FRONT is nothing but a “weighing machine OF frogs". (In our Telugu language it called “Kappaltakkidi”)

3rd front - a bunch of opportunists, what else? CPM Cadres should read to learn Marx's policies. CPM combination having only roots in 2 states (both states have poor progress) peaching national politics and may be want India to merge with China, when China is the worst place on Human Rights?
Mr.Yechury is now clear that minus other parties his party will not get even deposits in most of the places. CPM wants to project it self as common platform for all political parties which otherwise donot have any national standing. Interesting to note would be the kichidi which failed India many times in the past, will it able to stand united pre and post elections. I doubt because the common thread between all parties is the share of power and money and will not compromise. There will be 5 PM contestants and will severe contest for premier portfolios. With in days the khichidi will fall apart pushing Nation again for Mid term polls. It would be better if Mr.Yechury stop flying kites and be reasonable in forming alliances
CPM will hardly be able to retain its seats in W. Bengal. Nitish Kumar has categoricaly denied having any links with thrid front - lalu ji and Paswan day and night sing songs of loyalty to Madamji. Yechuriji please take care of your partner CPI who is in rebelion mood in Karala, then poking nose in other's home. You have never faught and won any election in India - thanks to Media who have made you look like something from nothing, so sit in your airconditioned office and await further orders from China.
What is the purpose of this front? What will this front do to strengthen the value of our unity?
The purpose of this front is to extort money from the largest single party after election results come for giving it support and become fabulously rich before and after formimg the government.
It is ridiculous, if not absurd that CPM is trying to cobble a third front utilizing the services of erstwhile UPA allies. It would be wise if the third parties confine their attempts to traditional known foes of BJP and the Congress. This would help in the polarization of votes. For an example there is no meaning in Tamil Nadu talking to both AIADMK and DMK about a third party alliance wherein the two known enemies will come together. Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh are in a different wavelength. They are now nourishing the desire of having the high post to any one of them, if possible one to be the PM and another one to be deputy PM. It does not mean things are so good in this election. There are many ifs and buts. Neither the congress nor the BJP is now in a position to form the Govt on their own. Hence it is the time for the individual parties to get as many seats as possible and then depending upon the strength to bargain with the Congress or BJP or to form their own Govt.
A useless creature SitaramYechury and his idiotic utterrances. But what he has to do wit hit, his only blame is that he chose to be communist. The most notorious and oppurtunist political herd of India and world. They are terroists in the fold ofpolitical establishemnt.Do somebody remember he went to Kathmandu to back Maoists who are threat to Indian stability.Throw him and his party in dustbin or any other place of refuse....
