Chandigarh, February 26 Linking City Beautiful with Rajasthan on rail, Union Minister Lalu Prasad today announced a ‘garib rath’ for Chandigarh residents.

Though most of residents Newsline spoke to would have preferred a more luxurious rail link, they were at least relieved that the much-needed link had been established.

But to their disappointment, the Budget did not offer much to the UT. Even the drop in AC fares does not affect the popular Shatabdi Express as it has only AC chaircar.

The reduction is only for AC Class I (7 per cent), AC Class II (4 per cent) and AC Class III (3 per cent).

Another five per cent cut in the Sleeper as well as Second-class fares has also been announced. A special train from Anandpur Shahib to Patna Sahib during the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Guru Gaddi has also been announced.

Other facilities include 50 per cent reduction in Second-class fare for girl students and senior citizens.

The government also plans to put up touch screens and ticket vending machines at railway stations.

Superintendent, Chandigarh Railway Station, R K Dutta said: “No announcement was made regarding the Morinda-Ludhiana link that is already under construction.”
