Land Acquisition Officer booked for corruption

Chandigarh, January 21 The Chandigarh Vigilance Department has booked Makhan Singh, Patwari, Land Acquisition Officer, UT Estate Office, Chandigarh, and his agent Sukhwinder Singh, on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500.

While Sukhwinder was arrested while accepting bribe on the behalf of Makhan Singh, Makhan managed to escape from the spot. Marked currency was recovered from Sukhwinder’s possession.

The raid was conducted by the Vigilance Office this afternoon, following a complaint lodged by a Sector 38 resident Karnail Singh.

According to the Vigilance officials, Makhan was harassing Karnail Singh for the last few days and allegedly demanded bribe for issuing Karnail Singh cheques of compensation for his acquired land in Dhanas village.

A case was registered against both Makhan Singh and Sukhwinder on charges of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Sukhwinder was produced in the local court from where he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
