Colombo, October 21: Sri Lanka has said that it has invited Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to the island nation to 'clarify' for himself the humanitarian position in the country.

Stating this Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said that his government was maintaining a close relationship with India and shared a similar stand on the issue of terrorism.

“With the view of clarifying the position of the Government with regard to the humanitarian mission in the North, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited the External Affairs Minister of India Pranab Mukherjee to Sri Lanka,” an official release on the minister’s statement said.

Quoting the minister, it said, the government has taken measures to brief the international community of its position.

As far as sending a delegation to India, Bogollagama said, the Government so far has not taken any decision. But a formal request has been forwarded to New Delhi inviting Mukherjee, the release said.

Referring to the decision of several parliamentarians of the Tamil Nadu Government to forward their letters of resignation to their Chief Minister, Bogollagama said: “none of them have resigned from their portfolios yet”.

The Foreign Minister said the goal of the Sri Lankan government was to bring democracy to all parts of the country and pointed out that it has become a reality in the East after the liberation of the province from the “clutches of terrorism”.

He affirmed that in the near future the people of Mullaittivu and Wanni will be a part of the democratic process in the country as terrorism will be is militarily defeated.

SL Tamils plight by S Mylava on 27 Oct 2008

I am from Ireland, Ireland achieved independence from UK in this modern world and the people are living happily and enjoying their independence here. Uk divide Malaya and declared independence to Singapore and Malaya; India was divided into Pakistan and India by the UK; India Divide Bangaladesh from Pakistan; Australia helped East Timor to gain independence from Indonesia. All these newly formed countries are enjoying thier independence without conflict as a souverign state. India must help this ancient civilised Tamil race from its suffering, in the hand of this raciest, oppressive, uncivilised and undemocratic Singalese governments. Indian External minister and the Foreign secretery must understand the real sufferings these Tamils face in that country. If the LTTE get defeted, that is the end of this Tamil race in Sri-Lanka, as the history shows the animocity of Singhalese kings towards Tamils from primodial period ownward.

Terrorists baitors are traitors by D. Arunachalam on 22 Oct 2008

Lies shouted repeatedly do not become truths. SL government has killed Tamils deliberately is one such falsehood. The LTTE have killed more Tamils, than the SL government forces during the latter's legitimate operations. Directly, LTTE has killed all the Tamil leaders, including their own brethren in other outfits as they would not tolerate any body to be there except themselves. Indirectly, they have used hapless civilians as human shields and made them face the gunfire when they are attacked. They are the mericless ones condemned by the whole world for forcing children to fight for them. Now, the government is fighting the terrorist group, branded the most dreaded in the world, the LTTE and not the Tamil people there. Above this is the Terrorist organistion that killed our Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in our soil and those who side with LTTE are traitors of this country.

Humanitarian psotition of SL Tamils by Canaga on 22 Oct 2008

Does India realise that the SL Goernments are the worst Terroist? The Tamils hav been clubbed to death for so many yeras from 1956 - how long can the Tamils live in this state. How many were killed form 1956 onwards, including 1983. Since no politics was possible with such a draconian racist, the 'boys' formed their group. What else can the Tamils do - you tell me, when all negotiatios have failed year after year.

SL is correct by REDDYBHAI on 22 Oct 2008

What right India has to poke its nose in other sovereign country? The communal govt. sitting in Delhi, could not save Kashmir Pandits in their homeland from Islamic terrorism. The UPA should concentrate on expelling non-Indian muslims from Kashmir instead of promoting terrorism on Buddhiks by Tamilians. The SL was candid in inviting to clarify about humanitarianism. Why UPA is afraid of resignation of TN MPs.? The votebank politics for power played by UPA is the main reason for all evils like islamic terrorism, Vatican's ugly culture, regionalism, castism, goondaism like Raj Thakare, etc The UPA will do a good service to India if it introspect it's power politics.

Gandhigiri by naresh on 22 Oct 2008

The best way for the Tamils in Sri Lanka to gain recognition world wide for their human dignity and not a seperate homeland is to abandon weapons and all sort of terrorists activities and walk the walk of "Gandhigiri".

Come and clarify humanitarian position, SL to Pranab by Arun on 22 Oct 2008

continued.....India’s politicians, especially the politicians of Tamil Nadu, must help to build a United Sri Lanka and to achieve this they must work with the moderate political leaderships of Singhalese and Tamils. The pro-LTTE constituency in India should be fully aware of the deaths, destructions, miseries and torments inflicted on the people of Sri Lanka by LTTE’S armed bandits and Singhalese extremists. Now armed bandits of Muslims in Sri Lanka wants a homeland called ‘ISLAMIASTAN’ in Sri Lanka. The Tamil Nadu politicians, especially Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha, should divert their resources and energies to repossess Pakistan -the land rightfully belongs to Hindu Dravidians, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and other natives whose cultural landscape Mohenjao Daro and Harrapa are irrefutable testimony to validate this claim.

Come and clarify humanitarian position, SL to Pranab by Arun on 22 Oct 2008

All Sri Lankans (Tamils and Singhalese) are victims of divisive politics of Singhala radicals’ vote bank politics, Singhala Tamil communalism, and the various armed groups of bandits of Prabaharan, Karuna, Pillayan, Douglas Devanandan, and several other small armed group of Tamil bandits. A united Sri Lanka is possible and viable only if the above undesirable elements are strictly banned from public office and politics. There are well talented moderate Singhalese and Tamil leaders to lead the country to peace and prosperity for which very broad structural adjustments (meaningful devolution of power to the provinces on a gradual process) must be made as an immovable foundation for a United Sri Lanka.

Bahadur on Mukher jee to Sri Lanka by Saravan on 21 Oct 2008

Yes, Rajiv Ghandhi assasination was grotesque. So was the attack on him in 1987 at the official welcome parade in Colombo. What was most upsetting was the killing of some 6000 Tamil people and raping of women at the hands of IPKF when things got out of hand. These are the sad facts of life.Harping on one event and not the others or coveniently forgetting others is not helpful. The Bangladesh intervention by India was also on account of a gross humanitarian crisis when its people were spiiling over into India to escape gross violence by W.Pakistan troops. Some 330,000 Tamils are in IDP camps in India and more are spilling over with resumption of war by SL government which unilaterally annulled the 2002 CFA on their promise to Sinhal Buddhist voters in October 2005 elections. If only 2002 to 2005 ceasefire brokered by IC including India with agreed 'federal political formula' was followed through none of what see could have happened. 800 TN fishermen killed by SL navy!

Mukherjee to Sri Lanka by Saravan on 21 Oct 2008

This is Rohitha Boggolagama's latest canard using the 'war on terrrorism' trickery. Yesterday SL refused to allow a EU Mission to the country to investigate human rights situation in connection with the GSP trade concession which it has enjoyed from 2005. Earlier SL refused to allow UN Monitors at the last UNHRCouncil Meeting. The Sinhala Buddhist extremist government, like all previous ones from 1983, have been sitting on a mountain of gross crimes against Tamil citizens and war crimes , including mass graves of Tamils in the north and east which should be the subject for the International Criminal Court/UN Security Council under international huamnitarian law against war criminals concerned. He cited 'sovereignty' but under its own constitution sovereignty lies with the people, not with anybody else, including his President and himself! Democracy in east is a farce under brutal Sinhala military occupation with Karuna and Pillayan at war! ALL Tamils in N

Come and clarify humanitarian position, SL to Pranab by Jey on 21 Oct 2008

Sri Lanakan foreign minister is trying to hide a pumbkin in a bowl of rice. The problem is not about democracy in the North and East of SL. Even if it is, for the minister's wish, nobody wants the democracy they practice in Sri Lanka. The issue is:the rights of the minority people in Sri LankaWell planned riots against the Tamils in 1956, 1977, 1979, 1983, 1985 by thungs and now the war against the Tamils.Address these Mr. Minister. Inviting the Indian foreign minister is a trick. The whole world knows the SL government had asked the UN groups to leave the war area where the people are suffering, and the NGOs have left. How can you take mr. Pranab Mukherji to those areas?

SRILANKA ISSUE by KUMAR on 21 Oct 2008

This Minister Mr Rohitha Bogollagama has made a comment in Australia recently that during the 90 s Mr J.R Jayawardene was one man who was destroying Sri Lanka and if he would have continued for some more time the country would have died as he was a one man destructor it did not happen but now as all the three brothers of the president are involved in running the country the country wiil Die Quickly this is the comment made by Mr Bogallagama. Your paper may check with this news in The Sunday Leader English paper dated 19-10-08 issue now he is inviting the External Affiars Minister of India to Sri Lanka to verify the situation . These fellows are fooling the Tamils Only God can save the Tamils

LTTE is military outfit, and Indian Government should not help it. If we help LTTE, why dont we help the terrorists in J

SL Tamils and India by Emmanuel on 21 Oct 2008

My friends in India, please realize one thing. It was very unfortunate that the LTTE faught with IPKF but India also should realize the consequences of IPKF presence in Sri Lanka. As Tamils we don't care whether India recognizes LTTE or other military outfits in Sri Lanka. The only way to put the end to this issue is to recognize Eelam as an independent nation. Have you seen a nation is shelling its own people with multi barrel rockets. Do you know when the babies and children are waking up with their ears bleeding because of the sound of the shelling. I read that 121 people have been bitten by snakes because they have been living in jungles. We are talking about a ruthless regime with Sinhalese Chauvanism. It is the time for all Tamils to unite fight this regime.

I can understand by Bhaskaran on 26 Oct 2008

All true peoples who have any concerns about the suffering of srilankans tamils will vouche for war against SriLankan government by India as they did when a same type of situation in Bangladesh arose, when war was declared on it.

LTTE ARE TERRORISTS by Tarun on 22 Oct 2008

Question doesnt arise of recognising Eleam. Then you will demand us recognision of Kashmir NATION AND LATER TAMILNAIDU AS A SEPERATE COUNTRY.Learn to live in peace.

LTTE, please let the people leave. Just because you are scared donot make the innocent in to human shields

SriLanka issue by Jagath on 21 Oct 2008

Tamils are fooled only by the Tamil Tigers. There is no need to 'save' the tamils. If not for the tamil tiger terrorists, tamils in SriLanka can lead happy lives. Only God can now save the tamil tiger terrorists.

Fighting Terrorism by Prakash on 21 Oct 2008

In India we ourselves are facing challenges of terrorism and it is prudent not to get involved in other country's internal affairs, especially if the people of Indian origin resorted to guns over dialogue. We burnt our fingers very badly in the past and Rajiv Gandhi became a casuality of the very people whom we went to help.

Sri Lanka by Bhadur on 21 Oct 2008

This is not our war. India should not get involved. The Tamil Nadu govt, should realize that when the IPKF went in to help the Tamil people in SriLanka went against them. Our soldiers are for India and if the LTTE is losing, so be it. At least there will be peace in Sri Lanka and India will not be accused of interfering in their internal affairs. Always remember Vietnam. The French and the Americans lost.

srilanka by kamal on 21 Oct 2008

First srilanka should realise that they are not indians and have no right to talk about our tamil ministers to resign or not, They can talk only about there stand , And one should not forget that tamilians are basically indians(dravidars who lived before all invations on india) and even our government should not forget this.

Indians and Sri Lankans by manju on 22 Oct 2008

Just like the Sri Lankans have no right to talk about indian ministers, Indians or their ministers have no right to talk about Sri Lankans whether they are Sinhalese or tamil or muslim. You cannot have it both ways and only a fool can think with selfishness. Basically what you are saying is that when I do it it is right but when you do exactly the same thing it is wrong. On the otherhand if the tamils in Sri Lanka are basically indians, why not take them all back to India. Indians cannot be in Sri Lanks exactly the same way as Sri Lankans cannot be in India. One thing is clear here, "Until you keep your mouth shut you can pretend to be wise".

Sri Lanka and Kamals post by Raj on 21 Oct 2008

According to your logic, then India should not interfere in Sri Lanka's internal affairs. Right?

indian tamils - tamils indian by san on 21 Oct 2008

hi kamal when tamils were basically indians that time there was no india. it is india only less then thousand years. do you mean to say you are tamil now not an indian.
