While everybody remembers last season’s finale for the flamboyance of Rohit Bal and his star models, this year’s Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week finale had just the clothes doing the talking. As always, the show started over an hour and a half late, but since it was for Anamika Khanna and Ashish Soni, hardly anybody was complaining. Khanna showed a clean and minimal line that borrowed heavily from traditional Indian handicrafts. Graphic prints, block prints and surface ornamentation blended seamlessly with the often dark palette. Skirts, dresses, coats and jackets came alive with fitted silhouettes.

Soni, on the other hand, showed both men’s and women’s lines. Taffeta silk, leather and cashmere came together with brocades and Lycra; while leather and

velvet mingled with crepe and satin; each flaunting an Indian touch. From sherwanis to shift dresses, from frocks to suits, Soni gave each outfit his signature style with subtle surface detail. We liked the 1940s-style smoking trousers, the draped jersey tunics and the lovely re-draft of the Peter Pan and mandarin collars.

On a day which saw a spate of star turns, from Minissha Lamba to Sameera Reddy to supermoms and dads like Rina Dhaka and Peter Punj, the spectacular last act was Katrina Kaif making an appearance in a floor-length gown by Soni.
