Kolkata, March 13 Nearly 35 per cent of those registered with West Bengal's employment exchanges are Muslims but when it comes to getting jobs the community account for only 3.3 per cent of the 8,209 lucky ones. This was disclosed by state Labour Minister Anadi Sahu in Assembly on Wednesday.

According to the data provided by the minister, 8,209 people got jobs through employment exchange during the current financial year of which only 271 were Muslims. The total number of minority candidates getting the job was only 374 with 86 Christians, 16 Buddhists and one Sikh.

The total number of registered unemployed in the state has fallen down to 57,21,016 persons by December 31, 2007 from the previous figure of 77,22,799 persons as on March 31, 2007.

As the computerisation progresses, the government is deleting the names of those who have crossed the age limit of 45 years, those who have not renewed their registration, those who have secured jobs but have not deleted their names from the lists, and those who are listed on more than one exchange, the minister said.

"Once the total computerisation is done, the number will shrink further," Sahu added.
