New Delhi Leaders of several political parties from Hindi-speaking states and the CPI on Monday came down heavily on MNS whose members punched SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi for taking oath in Hindi and demanded action against Raj Thackeray for trying to divide the country on grounds of language.

They also termed the incident in the Maharashtra Assembly as "anti-national and unconstitutional" and said the country could disintegrate if divisive forces were not checked.

Condemning the attack on Azmi, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said his party leader had done the nation proud by taking oath in the national lanaguage. "I would like to congratulate Azmi for maintaining the honour of the national language by taking oath in Hindi," he told reporters in Lucknow.

Reacting to the incident, RJD chief Lalu Prasad said in Patna that if efforts were not taken urgently to check divisive forces, the country could disintegrate.

"If India splits, it will be because of elements like Raj Thackeray. If urgent steps are not taken to keep such elements under check, nobody can save the country from disintegration," Prasad said, asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take strong to stop such acts.

His ally and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan said, "Hindi is our national language and Raj Thackeray and others responsible for the assault on Azmi must be arrested immediately."

Echoing similar sentiments, CPI leader D Raja said everyone had the right to take oath in the language he wants.

Raja said the design of the MNS to create division on various grounds like language was "highly condemnable" and criticised the silence of the Congress and the NCP on the issue.

Demanding a ban on MNS, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called for legal action against the legislators involved in the "unlawful act".

"It is a highly condemnable act ... Stern legal action under the Criminal Procedure Code should be taken against the MLAs of the MNS," he said in Patna.

"We respect Marathi ... But at the same time it is intolerable to allow people to show disrespect to Hindi – our national language," the JD(U) leader said.

SP General Secretary Amar Singh said the MNS chief was known for hooliganism. "We cannot tolerate insult to the national language," he said.

Raj Thackeray had last month warned that his party legislators would ensure that all MLAs in Maharashtra took oath in Marathi.

An unrepentant Ram Kadam, the MLA who slapped Azmi, said, "We repeatedly requested Azmi to take oath in Marathi as a token of respect for the language and 11 crore people of Maharashtra, but he would not listen. We were left with no option but to convey our feelings in the language he understands."

Questioning the status of Hindi as national language, MNS spokesman Shirish Parkar asked, "Is it spoken in south India where local languages are the medium of communication.

Azmi has always taken up the cause of the people from Uttar Padesh and hurt Maharashtrian pride."

Democracy in India means nothing more than a breeding ground for robber barons and scoundrels,The electoral constituencies in India are nothing more than family holdings, where elections results have produced the same people every time elections have been held. Only change has been the different family members switching political parties, with half the family members sitting in opposition and half in government. The elite class became elite courtesy of selling their loyalties time and again to the highest bidder.

Only India no regionalism by Indian on 09 Nov 2009

Thia is because of excessive democratic right given in flexible Indian constitution. Most of the regional parties are formed based on ethnic, caste and extreme regionalism ideology.Had there been the system of 2 political parties in the country like USA & other democratic counties, this type of uncivilised nuisance could not have been taken place in the Maharastra. Actually, the small & regional parties are more or less doing this type uncivilised act in the country.SP & BSP had already set this type of act in UP assembly. It is the high time to amend the constitution with the provision of 2 party system of democracy in the country for civilsed and stabilise democracy. All the states should be renamed as eastern region, northern region, western region, southern region or region 1, region 2, region 3 etc. There should not be any ethnic name of any state which has been done for divide and rule policy. So that we can proudly call our country India as the greatest democracy of the world.

MAHARASHTRIAN PRIDE IS NOT SO FRAGILE by Rana on 09 Nov 2009

The Maharashtrian pride is not so fragile that it can be hurt by Mr Abu Azami taking the oath of MLA in Hindi. Maharashtra and Maharashtrians have a very large contribution to the history of this country. Let us not paint the whole of Maharashtra in one color. Raj Thackery needs to be condemned and so also the MNS MLA's who carried out such orders. Do those MLA's not have a mind of their own. It is good that the speaker has suspended them for 4 years, so that the seats are not vacant and the MNS is also not represented in the assembly. If the seats had been declared vacant, a fresh election would have unleashed a fresh wave of jingoism and regional chauvinism. The next logical step would be to bring criminal cases against the MNS MLA's.

JINGOIST AND CHAUVANISTIC MNS by NIRANJAN on 09 Nov 2009

WHAT CONSTRUCTIVE WORK HAS MNS DONE FOR MARATHI MANOOS? EXCEPT INDULGING IN GOONDA GARDI IN THE NAME OF MARATHI MANOOS, THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING CONCRETE OR WORTHWHILE. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ELECT SUCH GOONS. IT IS THE SAME CASE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, IN UP, BIHAR, ORISSA ETC. OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM AND DEMOCRACY ARE GOING TO POT!

Most of the state CMs will be in dock by A Bharatpremi on 09 Nov 2009

If action is taken on MNS, many of our Chief Ministers who have forced their state language on people in a worse manner will have to be taken up similarly.

Language issue by Amar Prateek on 09 Nov 2009

I urge the Congress led UPA government to take urgent action.Such divisive forces will lead to the disintegration of the country if action is not taken...
