Bangalore, February 22: Apparently hitting back at Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said public icons who passed off smoking on screens as ‘creative liberty’ should take a leaf out of the book of actors like Aamir Khan how to use the artistic tool.

"Creative liberty should be used to improve society and not kill mankind", Ramadoss said in response to a query on public icons supporting smoking on screen as their right to creative liberty.

"Look at Taare Zammen Pe", he said, saying the film has helped in changing the mindset of thousands of teachers and parents in looking at the problem of dyslexia.

"That is what creative liberty should do", he said.

Shah Rukh had recently defended in Delhi on-screen smoking saying it was a creative liberty of artistes.

According to Ramadoss, increasing tobacco abuse by students was a growing matter of concern.

The Indian component of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey indicated that nearly 10 per cent of Indian high school going students used tobacco products.

Studies from NIMHANS pointed to decreasing age of alcohol consumption from 27 to 24 and now 19 years and an increasing alcohol consumption among women, he said.

Changing dietary habits was also giving rise to problems like childhood obesity. "We appear to now even overtaking countries like the US on the issue of obesity", he said.

Ramadoss had last month said Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan can learn a thing or two from superstar Rajinikant regarding smoking on screen. He had also said Khan should not have smoked in the stands while watching a cricket match in Mumbai.

SRK smoking on the screen by HS on 23 Feb 2008

I do not think that the film star have any effect over the population to pick up smoking. It is a matter of choice and surrounding which make a person smoker or non smoker. I can give you my example. My father was a chain smoker, and normally father being the usual role model, the child picks up smoking from him. But we three brothers did not smoke the whole of our life. We all are non smokers in the house. Infact we hate smoking so much that we cannot stand any body smoking in front of us. If that is the case then there are lot of good things which the Hero does on the film then as to why there are bad guys around doing all bad things. It will be totally in correct to hold SRK responsible for spreading smoking in the youths. It is a matter of choice for SRK to smoke on the screen or off the screen. As for Mr Ramdoss comments, there are so many health related issues which warrants attention from his ministry. He should concentrate more on that then SRK's smoking on the screen.

He should be making MCI corruption free--please do not delete this by dr.G.Srinivasan on 23 Feb 2008

Just now I was watching a Tamil movie screened on the Sun TV where the hero smokes in the bed room on the first night .Anbumnai Ramadoss should go and tell them .I had also written about a corrupt Medical council of India which takes money to sanction medical colleges. This is an open secret .Anbumani Ramadoss should be concentrating on cleaning up the ministry of health and MCI

Ramadoss tells SRK by gautam on 23 Feb 2008

Tobbaco smoking/chewing or inhalation is an acknowledge nuisance and leads to many health problems in active as well passive users.SRK is wrong in saying it is an artiste's creative liberty. There should be call to boycott his films if he continues with his belligerance attitude.SRK must understand his popularity can dissolve overnight if he oversteps.I would like to know whether he is a regular heavy smoker. If not then clearly he is trying to spoil youth. It is good to note that health minister is aware of problems caused by smoking, alcohol consumption and disorderly eating. He has not suggested how his ministry is going to tackle this social problems.

Indian Express sucks by Anonymous Coward on 23 Feb 2008

Sorry, I just deleted all the comments. Plenty of free-time on my hands to make Indian Express look like incompetent b@stards. They don't know how to run Forums. I am waiting for anybody from IE to come out an give me an explanation as to why anybody has the liberty to delete comments ?

He's got a point by Natarajan on 22 Feb 2008

You may hate this minister, his party or his ideology, but you've got to admit that there is merit in his statement. Cine-stars who have a mass following inspire people. They bollywood folks are not only telling a story but also act as a role-model to the society. The impact of seeing the hero smoking or the villian smoking is different. Ramdoss has not asked the entire actor community to stop smoking on the screen - only the heroes. If a story requires SRK to play the role of a gay, will he do it as part of artistic creativity?

Smoking Stars by sam on 22 Feb 2008

I am not a big fan of a minister telling people what to do but in this case he is right. Being a star you are also a role model many people follow whether you like it or not. India is a country with a good percentage of uneducated people. They lack the ability to realize smoking is not cool especially when ads portray exactly that with stars like SRK in the mix. So if you really care about your countrymen then you would quit smoking in public. The media also should exercise restraint when it comes to publicizing such issues. Instead of people of the stands now the whole country got to see SRK smoke. Stars are not immune to smoke either. So it comes with double benefit of being a better role model and avoid killing yourself so why not quit ? Ego can have bad consequences. Stars are better off thinking about it.

This is stupid comment from minister.

Both the Honorable Minister and ShahRukh Khan are driven by the need to keep thier image alive by throwing offerings of titbits to media, just like we go to temple and offer prasad to the Gods. Suppose we all listen to the minister will we stop dying, or will the misery of life stop, this is frivolous just like Narmada Bachao. Andolan. I myself am a smoker and a doctor and I hate the habit, not derogatively, we all are creatures of habit, I tell everybody smoking is bad, but I am against banning anything,I am with ShahRukh here, belief in a cause is no substitute for reality, think if we all stop smoking how many ciggarettes will die and how many farmers and Bidi rollers, finally the studies corroborating increased death risk from smoking are highly exaggerated, just go to the cancer ward and find out, I think we should not wish for a long life but for an honorable death.

Smoking Icons by PADMAKAR on 22 Feb 2008

Agree Icons need to exercise restraint on such issues having public visibility. But I think it is also the responsibilities of the media photographres and editors to cut out such pictures even if they capture the icon smoking say in a party or while enjoying cricket.Sowing the same picture 100 times as breaking news with blaring background music is best avoided.

smoking by NRI on 22 Feb 2008

SRK and other actors who smoke on the screen should see what USA is doing to the tobbacco company, which is forcing them to admit and pay heavy law suit damages for promoting smoking to Kids. To die from heart attack is more humane way of dying compared to long suffering from Cancer. Lung cancer is surely caused by smoking and many people have seen how the patiet dies. SRK and other actor should be smart enough to understand that promoting smoking is not art. It is just another way of making money!

SRK by P Jain on 22 Feb 2008

What the minister said is correct. Every human being should try to rise up in life and to do that it is a best practice to look at the real heros ..so if SRK can follow at least a bit of Aamir...he in real sense will be a good actor and a person. SRK....I watched Lagan, TZP, and many movies of Aamir...and when I watch Om Shanti Om, Chak De (so called hits) ...they are not even close...
