Pune, July 25 The Railways, Road and Traffic Management Sub-committee of MCCIA, chaired by traffic expert Chandmal Parmar, which deals in the matters related with railway and road transportation, safety of commuters and infrastructural development, has submitted a memorandum to Lalu Prasad Yadav, Union Railway Minister, expressing 'strong objections' for leasing out six acres behind Pune Railway Station.

The Chamber, through a press note, said it has drawn attention of the Railway Minister to the non-utilisation of railway land available behind the Pune Railway Station. Previously, Railway authorities offered this plot, measuring about six acres, for a commercial proposal, to a builder on a lease of 36 years for construction of multiplex. However, after objections were raised by MCCIA and other NGOs and subsequently by the Pune Municipal Corporation and Director Town Planning, Maharashtra, this important piece of land remains with the Railways, said the note.

MCCIA claimed it has learnt that the railway department has extended the offer of leasing out this land for another year. 'The decision of leasing out the land was unfortunate decision as there is no availability of land with the Railways near Pune Station for Commuters friendly development work, considering the heavy Traffic Congestion at the Main Gate of the Station, scarcity of parking space and heavy rush at the only Reservation Centre,' says the press note.
