Chandigarh, February 29 Mayor Pardeep Chhabra along with the residents and representatives of the market associations of sectors 34 and 35 met UT Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar to apprise him of the problems that have been compounded due to the closure of the small rotary of their sectors. The Mayor said he took up the matter with Kumar to put forth the view of the residents.

The decision of UT Administration to close the small rotary at the intersection of sectors 34 and 35 has evoked sharp criticism from various associations.

At a press conference, the members of Chandigarh Defence Colony Welfare Association, Traders’ Association Sector 35-C, Traders’ Association Sector 35-B and the Traders’ Association Sector 35-C (Inner Market) had pointed that Chandigarh Traffic Police in 2003 had recommended that ATC signals should be installed. The work on installation of lights never started leading to traffic bottlenecks at the concerned rotary.

The SSP Traffic had written to the UT Chief Engineer, recommending the urgency for the installation of the same in December 2007, but instead of the installation of traffic lights a decision to permanently close the said rotary was taken, they said.

The members said that closure of the said rotary has resulted in the increase in the concentration of traffic at the main rotaries of Sector 34/35/22/21 and Sector 34/35/43/44. They said that the closure was illegal as per the UT Administration by-laws and was condemned as a better alternative, installation of traffic lights, is available.

The members further said that in similar cases (rotary of Sector 36/37 and Burail), traffic lights were installed with great success in regulation of traffic. They point out the traffic lights at the Aroma Hotel intersection have been controlling the flow of traffic for more than a decade and is situated at a similar distance and has even more concentration of traffic as compared to the Sector 34/35 rotary.
