New Delhi After losing a critical ally in BJD, a shocked BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that he could not ‘ever imagine’ that Naveen Patnaik-led party would snap the 11-year-old ties with the saffron party which is now working on a fresh strategy ahead of the polls.

"I feel it is unfortunate. We could not ever imagine that the BJP-BJD alliance will break down," Singh said. The saffron party accused the BJD of unilaterally breaking the alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in the state.

"It was a decision of the BJD to break the alliance. Our party leaders are meeting to chalk out the future course of action," the BJP leader said.

According to sources, the BJP has not given up and the top leadership has activated ‘unofficial channels’ to rescue the alliance.

"The late-night happening was unfortunate. It is not beneficial for both BJP and BJD. Non-Congress vote is sure to be divided but all is not over," a top party leader said.

The sources said that BJP is trying to convince the BJD that the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections under President's rule would be damaging to the Patnaik's party.

The only fear for the saffron brigade is of BJD siding with the Third Front, they said.

Apart from Orissa, the party is slated to discuss coalition developments in Bihar, Maharashtra, Punjab and Haryana as it is worried that the Orissa developments could trigger more tantrums from allies like JD(U) in Bihar and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

L K Advani, who is slated to address a rally in Dehradoon later in the day, would be rushing back to the capital to attend the crucial meet on Sunday evening.

The development is perceived as a setback to the 'Advani for PM' campaign.

Late Saturday night, the BJP-BJD alliance ended after the talks over seat-sharing in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly polls failed.

The BJP withdrew support from the Navin Patnaik led government and demanded the imposition of President's rule in the state.

Left supports Patnaik government, hopes to forge alliance

The Left on Sunday came out in support of the Naveen Patnaik government, which was reduced to a minority following snapping of ties with ally BJP, and even hinted at forging an alliance with the BJD for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Orissa.

"We have said in case of test on the floor, the MLAs of CPI-M will be supporting his (Patnaik's) government," CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat said.

After the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) parted ways with BJP, it sought the support of the Left and other parties in a bid to continue in power.

Patnaik spoke to CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and party leader Sitaram Yechury has rushed to Bhuwaneshwar accompanied by Orissa CPI(M) Secretary Janardan Pati. The Central Committee of the CPI(M) is holding a two-day session of the Central Committee in Delhi.

Extending support to the BJD, CPI leader D Raja said there will be no threat to its stability due to pullout by the BJP.

"It is a positive development. It is clear that the allies of NDA are learning lessons about BJP's communal politics out of their own experience," Raja said.

There is a real possibility for cooperation between the Left parties and the BJD in the upcoming elections, Raja said.

BJD Rajya Sabha member Jay Panda spoke to Raja on Saturday night after the developments in Bhuwaneshwar.

Speaking in the same vein, Karat claimed it was "the beginning of the unravelling of the NDA and the UPA.

"In the coming days, the non-Congress, non-BJP parties will come together to form an alternative government in this government to bring some relief to the people."

While BJD, headed by Patnaik, has 61 members in the 147-member assembly, it requires the support of 13 more legislators to achieve the magic figure of 74 for remaining in power. The CPM and CPI have one MLA each.

Do a Karnataka in Orissa by Girish on 09 Mar 2009

BJP can do a Karnataka in Orissa and win majority seats now. It's time that BJP goes it alone in as many states as possible with very few allies.

wgi by Baatul on 09 Mar 2009

BJP wanted more seats to contest in Lok Sabha than what they did last time. Rajnath Singh will be held responsible for the break up. Its time to realize parties which remain quiet should not be taken for a ride.

bjp by dr.chandra k.shekar on 09 Mar 2009

BJP should develop with a long term view to get a majority on its own w/o depending on fair weather friends like these. develop a party based on principles and commitment to a strong india.

BJP should not go back to this alliance by Arun on 08 Mar 2009

One of the biggest mistake vajpayee did in his desperation to become PM is to forge alliance with this opportunistic regional parties with no values. India faces a very serious threat from Muslim fundamentalists and a nationalistic party like BJP is absolutely necessary to put pressure on the goverment to deal with this fundamentalists in a language they understand. BJP can only do better by not going into opportunistic alliances as it undermines the very reason why such party should exist. BJP should rise of its own and should think of forming goverment of its own even though it takes another 20 years. I know to BJPians it may sound stupid but remember muslim population in India is growing at a much faster rate than other communities and situation in India will only get worse unless it is tackled with Ironhand. Since no other party can do that, people will eventually have no choice but to vote BJP into power.

Left loves Leftover by Varinder on 08 Mar 2009

Why CPM/Left cried foul when SP came to the rescue of Manmohan Singh government at the time of No Confidence Vote? Is same Left not trying to come to rescue Naveen Patnaik government in Orrisa. Left seems to be without any issues and principles and Nandigram and Corrupt minister in Kerala has exposed them in public.

BJP diallamma by Syamasundara prasad Turaga on 08 Mar 2009

Definetly this is a bad sign to BJP. Mr. Rajnath Singh is unfit to be party leader. More over, though Mr. L K Advani is a good leader he is not liked by many of our national people and his statements in Pakistan about the contraversy person Mohmed Ali Zinna has casted a dark shadow on him. Such leaders are viewed as oppertunists. This is a big lession to BJP. If BJP does not take this into account, only GOD can save this party. The party should do good ground work both in urban and rural areas not indulging in hate politics. I hopr the word may to the minds of party leaders.

BJD breaking alliance with BJP by Alex on 08 Mar 2009

The BJD or JDU all of them have been untrustworthy in past. Right from Madhu Limaye, Raj Narayan, Dev Govda, Biju pagtnaik all of them have stabbed on the back in the past. They are bunch of opportunists and BJP should have known this already.

A suicidal step by (Dr.) B.N.anand on 08 Mar 2009

It seems to be a suicidal step by Mr. Biju Patnaik . It is indeed amzing that while he needs the support of at least 13 MLA to continue in power, he is dependinmg on the support of CP(M) and CPI. The combined strngth of these two parties is just two. It will create more instability in Orissa politics and am sure Mr. Patnaik is going to knock at BJP door after the elections. The lust for power is too much and it corrupts even the most wisest and intelligent people. Of all the parties, I wonder at the way the left parties , despite their minimus political presence in states other than W.Bengal, Kerala and Tripura are able to maneuver the political mathematics in the country in a way that it becomes difficult for other regional parties to ignore their moral support. It is through this way, the lefts have exploited the political weaknesses and the lust of power by the other politicians of the country.

Advani - please retire. by Aniyan on 08 Mar 2009

It is a failure of the BJP management and advise cannot escape from the bad impression BJP allies have towards the party. True, he was one among the two invented the party; but it is time for himt to retire.

God Save BJP!! by C.K.Sunil on 08 Mar 2009

BJP lacks inspiring leaders likr the late Mahajan. If Mahajan were alive the UPA would have packed their bag long ago. The adversaries of BJP knew this and he was removed from the seen in a very meticulous manner. It was definitely a political assasination and not what is made out for public consumption. The BJP also kept quite as his opponents in the party thought it is an oppertunity for them. Look at the incumbent prsident. Hardly anybody know him outside UP. In fact he was a stop gap arrangement before Mahajan takes the reins of the party. No media is friendly with them, neither print nor electronic. There is no wonder they are being deserted by their allies. Their PM nominee is also not acceptable to many. Congress is on an overdrive to malign the party everywhere.Only God can save this party!!

Well Done by Sajiv on 08 Mar 2009

This is good news that BJD has snapped ties with BJP. After the election, BJP will become a small party like NCP. Good luck BJD.

CPM's Orissa Secretary ,Janardan Pati Is corrupt Leader by Akash on 15 Mar 2009

I think CPM was not growing just because of State Secretary Jardan Pati's Curruption. He has been doing corruption and not letting Good leaders in Orissa to come up. He should be expelled from the Party as soon as possible . He also has team within the Orissa CPM state commitee who has been supporting his from Past long years. They should also be removed
