The Left parties, which staged a massive demonstration near Parliament today, demanded that the Government should immediately withdraw the recent hike in fuel prices.
“At this juncture, when the Government, which is being run by the support of Left parties, is benefiting the communal forces due to its anti-people policies, we will have to seriously reconsider it (support),” CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said addressing the rally.
“If the Government wants our support, it would have to learn how to implement the pro-poor policies and shun the policy of supporting the capitalists in increasing their profits unrestrainedly,” he said.
The Left leader also said the outside supporters of the UPA will take on the Government on the issue of price rise in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
“Our demand is that the Government should withdraw the fuel price hike. It is fine if they do so, otherwise we will decide our future course of action. We will definitely mount pressure on the Government in the Monsoon session of Parliament to implement the alternate policies suggested by us (on petroleum prices),” he said.
“We are asking the Manmohan Singh Government to roll back the oil price hike immediately. But the Government has not done anything so far. Therefore, the Left parties will be intensifying their agitation,” said D Raja, National Secretary of CPI.
