"We will demand tomorrow from the Government to tell us as to when it is going to the Board of Governors of the IAEA. The question is not whether they are going (to IAEA). The fact that they are going ahead is clear, but when is the question," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters after a meeting of the party's Central Secretariat in New Delhi.
"There are no two opinions (about the Left decision to withdraw support). Modalities will be decided ... we have to write to the President (to declare withdrawal of support) ... all these things will be decided," he said.
Asked whether the Left parties had any indication as to when the government would move the IAEA, Bardhan said "the government itself is in a hurry. If they are going (to IAEA), they are going within this week ... within the next seven, eight or ten days."
To persistent queries including whether the Left parties would wait for the Prime Minister to return from his visit to Japan to attend the G-8 summit before taking the ultimate step, the CPI leader said "if they tell us they are going on the 5th or 6th, we will withdraw then itself. But in the normal course, we will wait till he comes back."
Besides the CPI Central Secretariat, the other Left parties -- RSP and Forward Bloc, also met in New Delhi on Thursday. The CPI(M) Politburo has already decided to pull the plug the moment the government moved the IAEA Board of Governors to finalise the India-specific safeguards agreement, which is a key step in operationalising the nuclear deal.
To a common man this N-Deal, looks like another BOFORS. The majority is against the N-Deal. It was so even in the case of BOFORS. There was a specific dead line set by the BOFORS to the middle-men to clinch the order from the Indian Govt. So also in the present N-Deal the specific dead line is set by the USA to clinch the deal. There was Win Chadha and Mr.Q at that time to bag the agency commission etc.. and now who is it? This deal may ensure a regular (income) commission coming for the next 20 years (as long as the deal is alive) irrespective of which party is ruling India and US. These are the striking similarities BOFORS and N-Deal. Now people should judge for them selves why the UPA wants to RUSH and sign this deal AT ANY COST…
Thank God These communists leaving the govt. These people do not realise that when a person like Kalam said that this deal is good for country then why opposing it. Mr Raja said in interview that not one kalam decide which is good for the country. I don't think Commies will withdraw the support since they know that USA has given hefty reward to Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh to save Congress. Yes without Left's help it would have been difficult for India to safeguard Kashmir. They provided the support to befriend Soviet Union which consistently vetoed all motivated resolutions on Kashmir in Security Council. The Indo-Soviet friendship treay, a product of Left-Of-Centre polity, stabilised the 'Unity and Integrity' of India.
What is so good with siding with Soviets or getting their support. We ended up on the losing side of the cold war. Soviet Union itself disintegrated. If we want o be hypocritical like everyone else, we should have alteast sided up with Democratic USA rather than totalitarian crazy commies. Come on, after preaching to the world we end up supporting the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. National interest is supreme. When nations pursue their interests at least everyone knows what the game is. As and when Communists withdraw from UPA, it would be a major turning point in Indian polity. If the Left could gain traction to unify their 'Vaam Bandhus' amidst Naxals, Maoists, SUCI and various other organisation they would emerge as a very potent force. Such consolidation could augur well for India and imply the cessation of grave threats to India's internal security. Their effort to wrest political control Constitutionally is a welcome step for germane in it is the potential to evolve and pressure Market Economy which would drive welfare measures for the poor. Their exit from Centrality of the polity makes needed room in the short run for Market oriented reforms, which also is a very welcome development.
