This is the second time in a row that the plant has won this distinction.
The Ministry of Environment and Forests has fixed the emission limit of 150 milligram per Newton cubic metre (mg/Nm3) for thermal power plants in the country. The SPM level of unit 1 of GHTP had been noted at 21-54mg/Nm3 while at unit 2 it had been 22-89 mg/Nm3 in 2005-06.
In the survey conducted for 2006-07, the emission levels of SPM have come down to 25-87 mg/Nm3 for unit 1 and 30-59 mg/Nm3 for unit 2.
The Punjab State Electricity Board Chairman, YS Ratra, said that in spite of high ash content coal received at the thermal plant, the emission levels have been kept well below the pollution control norms and the distinction has been achieved due to the best operation and maintenance practices adopted at the plant.
Ratra further disclosed that the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant, Ropar, has been awarded ISO Certification (ISO9001-2000) in December 2007. The Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant, Bathinda has already achieved this distinction in early 2007. Ratra further added that ending December 2007, the state electricity board is ahead of the given targets of generation set by the Central Electricity Authority.
