Barack obama

Washington Hoping to end nearly three decades of distrust and strained ties, President Barack Obama on Friday reached out to the Iranian people, saying the US wants to have "honest" engagement with the Islamic Republic but made it clear that this process will not be advanced by threats.

In a surprise video message with Farsi subtitles on the eve of Iranian New Year festival of Nowruz, Obama said his administration was committed to pursuing "constructive" ties among the US, Iran and the international community.

"This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect," Obama said outlining his administration's new approach towards Tehran, indicating a distinct shift from the hardline pursued by the previous administrations.

Stating that he would like to speak clearly to Iran's leaders "in this season of new beginnings", Obama said, "we have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community."

The two nations have not had diplomatic ties since 1980.

Why the US Freeze foreign reserves ? by inptilayan on 22 Mar 2009

Let USA agree as a goodwill gesture to release all the Iranian assets frozen 30 years ago. This is one change that can create some credibility in the Iranian leadership. Is it unfair that the US freezing the assets of its good friends like Iran( during the time of the King of Kings), simply because they decide to follow a different ideology and a different policy in world affairs. Does not independence mean to be independent in ideology, system of democracy, foreign relations, economic nationalism and cultural independence.? Why does the US expect nations to toe their lines strictly to be supported by it? Please stop meddling in other nations affairs.

Iran - A country U.S. can't ignore for long by Naim Naqvi on 21 Mar 2009

All administrations prior to President Obama had underestimated the courage and determination of Iranian people and tried their best to undermine Iranian leaders. The U.S. policies have failed miserably in Afghanistan and Iraq was never a pleasant experience either. I think the present administration has realized that despite all its limitations Iran is the only country in the middle east that has a democracy of sorts. The Ayatullahs of Iran are learned scholars and not some cropped-up-from-some-where street politicians. They are not fanatics as U.S. wanted to portray. They have a sense of history. they are committed, undaunted and they are politicians with a difference. Both the countries gained nothing, achieved nothing during these decades of attrition. It would be in the interest of world community if U.S. and Iran sit together and find a honorable way out of their differences and war of nerves.

International Peace by G NAUSHAD BASHA on 21 Mar 2009

mutual respect, open lines of communication, and friendship promotes international harmony, trade and prosperity. I admire and respect President Barack Obama for being such an outstanding visionary. I fully trust such mindset will support world peace. May God bless him for ever. Aameen

Iran by Avinash Baranwal on 20 Mar 2009

This is the way Iran speaks...US is coming down to talk to this country...Unlike Indians, who just rush -rush - rush to US and US hardly blinks unless it serves it's purpose. Great Iran.

Diplomacy again by Sandeep on 21 Mar 2009
