Pune Nearly two weeks after the southwest monsoon withdrew from the country, Pune today saw cloudy weather. The city was overcast on Tuesday with some parts receiving light rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said this trend is expected to continue for the next two to three days.

“There is a depression over the Arabian Sea. The entire state is expected to receive rainfall over the next few days. It will be a bit more intense in southern Maharashtra,” said Medha Khole, deputy director, IMD.

In the last few days, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had seen rainfall because of a low-pressure system in the South. Now this system has moved up north, Khole said.

This is not entirely abnormal for winter, Khole said adding that cyclonic season falls in October-November.

"It is not exactly unseasonal. If a low pressure is formed then there will be rains," she said. The southwest monsoon had withdrawn from the country on October 22.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures in the city have increased slightly.

The agriculture department is hoping that this will prove beneficial for the crops. "It depends on the intensity. But otherwise rains will be beneficial for the tur crop, which is at the pod formation stage, which is critical. Other crops like jowar, gram, wheat will also benefit from rains," said Prabhakar Deshmukh, agriculture commissioner.

In the last week of September, unseasonal rains led to widespread crop damage in eight districts and the intensity of the rains was also high.
