Panchkula, January 20 Following in Chandigarh’s footsteps, Panchkula traffic police is all set to educate commuters on traffic safety by setting up an announcement system at some of the major traffic lightpoints in the city. Also, taking into consideration the increasing number of traffic violations at the Majri Chowk, the department has decided to declare it a ‘model chowk’ with 24-hour police deployment there. The police is planning to tie up with All India Radio for the project.

“The initiative is part of the bigger plan that we have for improving the overall traffic policing system in the city. The aim behind setting up the announcement system in Panchkula is to help educate the city residents about the traffic rules,” said ASP, Panchkula, Maneesh Chaudhary. He added that initially, the system will be set up at the busy traffic lightpoints.

He said the points where the department planned to set up the system initially would include the Telephone Exchange lightpoint near Sector 5, Majri Chowk lightpoint in Old Panchkula, Sector 17/ 18 traffic lightpoint and Mansa Devi T-Point. “These lightpoints have been selected on the basis of their heavy traffic flow. We also plan to declare the Majri Chowk in Old Panchkula as a ‘model chowk’ for which we propose to have a round the clock deployment of police force there,” said Chaudhary.

Chaudhary said, “Looking at the heavy traffic inflow at the Majri Chowk, there will be 24-hour police deployment, and also close-circuit cameras and announcement systems at the lightpoint. We are also negotiating with the All India Radio for preparing recordings for the traffic-related announcements.”
