Life is not just all song and dance for Ashley Lobo. He might have his hands full right now with choreographing chartbusters for Bollywood films, but that does not mean he believes in limiting his portfolio to just tinseltown. The former Delhiite, and currently a popular choreographer in Mumbai, has now collaborated with photographer Amit Pasricha for a series of video art on his dance company called Danceworx. “I have always been interested in combining two mediums. Dance in films achieves that to some level, but using the still medium is also very exciting,” says Lobo. A casual conversation with Pasricha over a year ago brought the two together. Pasricha has created 30-40 visual references of the core dancers of Lobo’s repertoire.

“Much of the work is aimed at capturing the emotions and the beauty of the movement, as is the nature of body art,” explains Pasricha, who shot the entire series over three days. Ashley Lobo’s Danceworx, as Pasricha has named the exhibition, forms a part of a greater series called “India Wide” and “Monumental India”, and will be on show at the Epicentre in Gurgaon from February 29. All the works together will be a part of Pasricha’s upcoming book on panoramas, slated for a 2009 release.

For Pasricha, son of renowned dance photographer Avinash, the challenge was quite different. He had to use the lens in a way that was distinctive from his father’s style, without missing out on the fluidity of movement or the expressions. “My father would never capture a theatrical moment. Simplicity was his essence and he always believed in capturing things the way it was,” says the 42-year-old. He, however, had Lobo create the entire paraphernalia— a stage along with proper lighting before he went about his visuals. “I feel reality is complex and many-layered, so the theatrical set-up brings it out,” he says. Most of the images capture emotions—love, hate, jealousy and bitterness and form a continuous set-up. “Video art has to be seen as a sequence. People expect a story in a dance sequence and my exhibition follows the same route,” he says.

For Lobo too, the experience has been unique. He worked together with about 15 members of his team bringing out moods and moments to be captured for posterity. “Dance is a medium which has many stories to tell. When you see the frames you’ll understand the nuances of our every day life being enacted,” says the man, who has just finished choreographing for Ajay Devgan’s directorial venture, You, Me Aur Hum. “Both Kajol and Ajay are keen learners and it was fantastic the way they came together, particularly in the salsa sequence,” he says. Up next is a song sequence featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Arshad Warsi in Leena Yadav’s next venture Teen Patti. The Mumbai chapter of Danceworx is all set to get underway as well. Clearly, Lobo believes in dancing to his own tunes.
