New Delhi Passersby foiled a kidnap attempt in Sarojini Nagar, South Delhi, on Sunday evening when they caught and beat up the alleged kidnappers who were trying to force a 25-year-old woman into a car after molesting her, the police today said.

Both suspects have been arrested and the police have registered a case of kidnapping against the duo.

The victim, who works with the front desk of Ashok Hotel, was returning home from work around 7 pm when the incident occurred.

The arrested men have been identified as Sunil Kumar (22), a cab driver with a Noida school, and Akash Deep (20). Police said the two admitted during interrogation that Deep is a guitarist at the Iskcon Temple in East of Kailash. But an Iskcon spokesperson said no one by that name works with the temple.

According to police, the victim (name withheld) was walking home on Hoshiar Singh Marg, near Africa Avenue, when a Maruti van stopped in front of her and two men in their early-twenties got out and molested her.

In her FIR, the victim said the two then tried to drag her into the van. As she cried out for help, a group of people walking on the road gathered and surrounded the van, the FIR says. The irate group first beat up the duo and then broke the van’s windowpanes.

While Sunil Kumar was caught in the melee, Akash Deep managed to escape. He was arrested later on information provided by Kumar, an officer said.

“The victim identified Kumar as the one who had molested her and dragged her to the van,” the officer said. “We took him to AIIMS Trauma Centre for first-aid and later arrested him.”

After raiding several possible hideouts during the night, the police caught Akash Deep on Monday morning. “He was planning to escape Delhi,” the officer said.

V N Das, a spokesperson with Iskcon Temple, said Akash Deep is “not our guitarist, nor is he involved with us in any way”.

The police said both are residents of Amar Colony, Lajpat Nagar. An official said during interrogation, Kumar and Akash Deep said they were drunk and saw the young woman walking alone on the lonely stretch, and found her a soft target to kidnap and later rape.

The FIR has been registered at Sarojini Nagar police station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said, “Antecedents of both the accused are being verified to ascertain their involvement in other cases.”

Good Job ! Public can do what the courts cannot ! Delhi Public is far better than Mumbai ! Had it been Mumbai people would have just watched and walked away.

Good Job ! by San on 20 Oct 2009

That is why Mumbaikars are afraid of criminals and harbour them in their lives as God. Yes, ordinary people should not depend on police and courts for their safety and security. Now Delhi courts may be worried as how to stop people protecting modesty of citizens and let their corrupt legal machinery take control of situation.

We have been reading in the news paper that crimes are increasing in Delhi and Delhi is no.1 crime city in India. It seems state govt and Delhi Police are sleeping and unable to control the crimes. In such scenario, local / public should take law in their own hand and must kill the culprit. Else our stupid politician will involve and release them on bail. First, State Govt should be dismissed as they are unable to control Crimes in Delhi
