Saraswati Modern School
The students of Saraswati Modern School, Hambran Road, celebrated Lohri in the traditional way, enjoying sugarcane, the beats of the dhol, and flying kites in the school. The whole playground wore the look of a fair with songs, laughter and colourful kites, as the children shouted cries of victory when they cut the kites of their rivals.
The morning assembly was dedicated to the spirit of Lohri. The children sang bhajans and spoke on the significance of the festival. A special mention was made about celebrating each festival in true spirit, and not making it a show off of strength and riches. The speakers also asserted that festivals are celebrated equally in happiness for boys and girls. They urged the children to initiate a change in thinking, to bring about a change in society.
School Headmistress greeted the children, their families and friends on the occasion. Later children enjoyed dancing and singing traditional songs around the bonfire. The beat of the dhol made everyone to shed their inhibitions and dance with joy.
Harkrishan Public School
Students of Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, celebrated Lohri with enthusiasm. School Director Umal Kaur lit the traditional bonfire. The pre-school section presented a cultural programme to mark the occasion. The kindergarten students presented a colourful giddha. The significance of the festival was also highlighted. The students sand folk songs and recited poems to mark the occasion.
New Senior Secondary School
At New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, the festival was celebrated with fervour. A bonfire was lit. The students and their teachers, and the staff enjoyed sweets, groundnuts, gachak etc. A kite flying competition was also held, in which Tagore House stood first. The students also participated in a declamation contest to mark the festival of Lohri.
Everest Playway and Nursery School
The festival of lohri was celebrated with enthusiasm at Everest Playway and Nursery School, Maharaj Singh Park. The children came well-dressed and performed cultural programmes. They sang traditional songs, and danced merrily too. Rajinder Sharma, President of Association of PSEB Affiliated Schools of Punjab, distributed eatables.
Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan
In a function held at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, Charanjit Singh Atwal, Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha, exhorted the cultural and social organizations to make concerted efforts to educate the youth about our rich cultural heritage. Atwal was addressing a well-attended gathering of youth at a function organized by Youth Sabhyacharak Lok Hitaishi Manch. Member Parliament Sharanjit Singh Dhillon appreciated the play, ‘Parindey Jaan Hun Kithey?’ aimed to create awareness among the youth about the serious problem of pollution in the environment.
Green Grove Public School
At Green Grove Public School, Mohanpur, Khanna, the day was celebrated with gaiety. Principal S George and his staff lit the bonfire. Students danced on Punjabi numbers and exhibited their talent. The staff, teachers and children enjoyed the traditional Lohri eatables.
Punjab Sewa Society
Punjab Sewa Society organised Lohri mela at Indira Colony, Industrial Area A, under the chairmanship of Roop Singh Jassal. Dr Ajit Singh urged the men and women to celebrate on the birth of the girl child with equal fervour. On the occasion, a new-born baby girl was gifted Rs 1,100. Dr Ajit urged everybody to fight female foeticide. The children of Happy Model School presented a cultural programme. They were distributed eatable by the society.
