Look beyond 'Mandal and Kamandal' politics: Naqvi to BJP

New Delhi In an apparent dig at Varun Gandhi and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who took the Hindutva line during the Lok Sabha poll campaign, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday said the era of “Mandal and Kamandal” was over and development was the main issue.

“The era of Mandal and Kamandal (OBC reservations and Hindutva) is over. The era of development which was started in 1999 and continued till 2004 in the regime of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the main issue,” Naqvi told reporters in New Delhi.

He said wherever BJP fought on positive issues like development, education, security and employment the party had done well.

“Wherever we fought on negative and non-issues we performed badly...70 per cent of the Indian voters today are under the age group of 40 years and they look forward to development of the region and the state and progressive politics,” he said.

However, Naqvi evaded questions on whether he was referring to Varun and Modi. Party insiders say BJP lost votes in several constituencies after Varun's hate-speech in Pilibhit and areas where Modi had campaigned.

Naqvi said though it was too early to arrive at the reasons for the poll debacle and a proper analysis was needed, he conceded that as a political party BJP needed to “take all sections of society together”.

Naqvi by Naveed on 01 Jun 2009

Muqtar Abbas Naqvi himself lost the elections so badly that he doesn't have face to talk about the failure of the BJP. The BJP was busy doing yagnas, hiring swamis, supporting hate speeches, higlighting myths such as ramsethu and ram mandir during the campaigning. Narendra Modi had a lot to offer the people in terms of development in Gujrat, but instead he selected his pet topics, targetting Gandhi family and invoking hindus againts muslims. The party never had a solid, complete package to offer the people of the country. Each leader campaigned in his own way without caring the common agenda of the NDA. I think the NDA is a gone case now, we can see more and more members of the alliance disintegrating themselves.

This idiot only now realized that Mandal Kamadal is of no use! Where has he been all these years? Naqvi is a hypocrite.

Naqvi is right Development is the issue by Dave Makkar on 22 May 2009

BJP failed to high light that Congress in their 5 years misrule have not constructed even 5,000 KM of road. It was Bajpai with his systemic vision for the future along with his economic think tank Govind Acharaya came up with an idea of joining every part of India with roads and joining every river all over India to provide water

What congress has done? by Rama Murthy on 22 May 2009

Few decades ago Indira Gandhi canvassed with the slogan, "Garibhi Hatao".Today Rahul Gandhi canvassed by saying "Congress is with poor people".So after all the years of congress rule poor people exist. They are true in saying such things, as they do not allow poor to get better and see that they always remain poor and will vote for congress in the hope of getting better.

In to-day scenario people of India wants cour country towards progress and stability of the Goverment.BJP can not win the hearts of people by hatred measures and projecting Mr.Manmohan singh as a Weak Prime Minister. You may take example from mr.Rahul Gandhi in his poll campaign hw was very hard working and positive in his approachImran Forward,Kolkata

BJP by vibhaas on 22 May 2009

BJP needs to really have a rethink and then decide.Needs to get indeendent of Sangh Parivar and dump any inconvenient allies. It should decide and go one way, If it is "soft" development agenda then it really needs to give leadership to younger people and give them an opportunity to take the party to nect level. Publicly announce that it stand for all sections of society and shall fight for everybody's rights. Tough thing to do but they can. That is a legacy which Advaniji should leave rather than resigning and sulking. There is a lot of work reuired. They should change their complete media representation and get some good looking and well trained people to present BJP in Media. High time to dump the old order. Lastly increase its presence in all sttaes where they dan't have much preesnce. They can do it. Build party block by Block.

BJP's agenda for the future by Subhash Bakshi on 22 May 2009

BJP's negative and pessimistic approach cost them the debacle. People voted for Roti, congress's programmes like Waiving of farmers loans, NREGS, increasing the procurement price for farmers are the real reasons for their victory and not the stability as is being put out by the Elites. No one is interested in the Mandir or caste based politics. India's youth is moving from religion to spirituality, he moving forward wants progress , peace and prosperity not the fear, hatred, and disharmony as projected by the BJP's campaign. BJP NEED TO SHED THE ARTICLE 370, UNIFORM CODE, AND REMOVE THE FEAR FROM THE MINDS OF MUSLIMS and Christians if they want to play a constructive role in building a strong India

Mandal and Kamandal by N.V.SANKARAN on 22 May 2009

Mr. Naqvi seems to forget that it was Mr. Advani's decisive Hindutwa(I would not call it 'hardline') of equality for everyone and appeasement of none that had propelled BJP as a national party. Until then, the party had remained a total non-entity despite Mr. Vajpayee's charisma.

Advani's Sins by Ganesh Pai on 22 May 2009

The greatest sins committed by Advani are: 1. Being part of the NDA government even after its abject failure to counter terror. 2. Attacking PM personally. The BJP never tolerated personal attacks on Vajpayee when he was called a mask, then how can they have a different yardstick for the PM. Second, a party which accuses Cong of being soft on Pakistan bent over backwards to be friends of PAK when in power. They failed to teach pak a lesson after Parliament. When Pak army could cross into Kargil, what stopped the NDA from allowing Indian Army into Gilgit and reclaiming POK? The NDA was an abject failure after Parliament attack and Advani was part of the Government during all this in spite of his non-existant proactive policies again terror only on paper. I personally think if NDA was in power during Mumbai riots, Jaswant singh would have agreed to all demands of the terrorists and escorted them safely to pak and gloated over that he had saved a few more lives.

Mandal and Kamandal by D.A.Eswar on 22 May 2009

Another important factor is: English Media biased reporting against BJP helped Congress to win projecting Congress as Champion of Muslims and Christians.Few incidents of violence by anti social elements in a country of 1 Billion projected by English Media damaged BJP.Public relations by BJP is very important other wise they will lose election again. When Vajpayee led India as PM same English Media projected BJP as a positive Chapter despite coalition politics and troubles

About turn in BJP by GNS on 22 May 2009

Why not BJP make either Naqvi,Jaitley or Shourie leader of opposition and dump ALL old bags like Advani,Joshi ( and in the process dump all divisive politics ) to emphasise the youthful face of the party and its orientation for developing India ? Also it should say it would support UPA where their economic / political decisions are in tune with BJP's own. That shows to Indian voters how responsible is BJP and can be trusted to lead India again in 2014.BJP should DROP blaming, hating, socially dividing policies and embrace loving, harmonising, uniting policies. They may like to observe age-old Hindu Mauna Vrath for 100 days to allow UPA to find its course and vociferously attack them with alternate policies if they don't.At the same time, they should groom young BJP leaders as shadow ministers ( announcing their names and portfolios ) with adequate back office support. That would be welcomed by all of India as the first sign of responsible BJP.

I couldn't agree more. by Anonymous on 22 May 2009

Mr by Somesh ponmani on 22 May 2009

Naqvi is absolutely right. BJP had no agenda except criticize the Congress Party. The people of India are not naive to believe Advani's religious divisive policy. The current population wants a development platform which only Congress could provide. Advani and Co. should take 'Vanvas' and spend their remaining days in Himalayas atoning for their sins. Also, the 'quota' raj should end. Even after more than sixty years of independence, it is a sham on the Constitution to perpetuate the quata system. Only merit should prevail.

Kamandal politics by Jafar Zaidi on 22 May 2009

Muktar Abbas Naqvi should be cautious before issuing such statements. While on the otherside BJP leaders are giving credit for Varun and Modi to get even as many seats, Mr. Naqvi is playing different tune. Naqvi's. days in BJP are now numbered as hard liners are to take over.

Mandal -Kamandal by sivaji on 22 May 2009

Too much of anything is too bad. I wish leaders like Naqvi learn to voice such serious concerns on a regular basis without criticizing any others and not leaving the party. I admire some leaders who, inspite of adversity, continue in BJP and thats good for the party more than themselves. Appreciate Mr NaqviSee what happened to Paswan he is too much of a Mandal Guy

Time is over for Politics of Mandal and Kamandal by Athreya on 21 May 2009

I like the way Mr Naqvi has succinctly summed up the electoral win thrown away by BJP. Everything was going for an alternative to the mess the UPA was into. It is the campaign that made all the difference. Indians came out of their cocoons and listened to all. They tried to make sense of what is being promised to them. Where they found clarity in the promise they gave a chance, without even doubting the ability to fulfil the promise. Advaniji as also the BJP top think tank did a blunder by allowing Varun to contest. They could have signalled clearly they cannot have candidates with controversies like what Varun had. Frankly, for anyone who is less than a Gandhi, they would have done that. Then how are they a party with a difference? Arun Shourie did a big damage unintentionally by straying into a succession to Advani story, when Advani himself was just a PM in waiting. The voice of BJP was not the same in every constituency. A problem which UPA did without. Particularly Congress.

From one Naqvi to another - from Mandal to Kamndal by Naim Naqvi on 21 May 2009

I have always been an admirer of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi's oratory skills. However, I always felt pity for his advocacy of political planks. I am feeling rather relieved when I read his recent statement about "Mandal and Kamandal". The spontaneous rection of Naqvi and Shahnawaz Hussein in response to Varun's venomous statements was justified and prudent. Unfortunately the big guns of BJP silenced this saner voice - a voice of reason of these two Muslim members. Had BJP listened to them with wisdom and patience, the outcome of election could have been somewhat different. It is so tragic that Muslim M.P.'s either from BJP, Congress or any political party do always turn into nervous, frightened jelly bags when it comes to crunch. It is bad for democracy. Mukhtar is showing some courage now and I hope it is not the result of his helplessness as he has nothing much to prove or lose. The million dollar question is - what these issue-less parties would do if you take away Mandal and Kamandal ?

BJP Politics by Jafar Zaidi on 21 May 2009

Mr. Naqvi Mr. Varun

Look beyond 'Mandal and Kamandal' politics: Naqvi to BJP by Balakrishna S.Pai on 21 May 2009

Mr. Naqvi you are wrong again as you usually are when you give your political comments regarding the party and its bonding with its voters. The BJP lost because it tried to become a carbon copy of the Congress. It won twice because the voters believed it was a party with a difference as it professed. But this time it did not even attempt to say that. It only kept repeating the same old slogans of development and secularism. It lost not because of Varun Gandhi's and Modi's utterances, but because the voters thought that Varun Gandhi and Modi were sidelined and their utterances were declared to be their personal views by party think tanks such as yourself. The sooner the party gets rid of people such as you it will be better for the party. Hindutva philosophy is the soul and chitti of this nation as Deendayal Upadhyay has put it. Until the BJP embraces Hindutva with conviction and and also rids itself of corrupt and egoistic so called new generation leaders it has no future.

I dont agree by Ash on 21 May 2009

Mr. Naqvi, i dont agree with what you said. In 2004, we fought the election on development and good work. But what happened, Vajpayee lost. What ever it is , muslims and chritians will not vote BJP. Congress won this time because of polarized muslim and chritian votes and not because of Manmohan singhs development as media points out (i dont see any development that he has done as PM). Only way BJP can win is by polarizing Hindu votes.

Mr. FIND-OUT THE MAIN REASON BEHIND YOUR DEFEAT. MANDAL. KAMANDAL by HINDUSTANI on 21 May 2009

Mr. Naquvi could not find the 'Real' reason behind his/BJP defeat. Mandal, Kamandal and Development will remain in Indian Politics, till the caste based voting/candidates. BJP is distancing from workers and voters. 'Opposition' just for 'opposition' will not should be avoided. Healthy,Positive and Constructive Opposition of ruling party is welcome, otherwise in next election the party will be shrieked.

BJP's political bankruptcy. by Hassan on 21 May 2009

They were trying to bluff and divide Indinas by instilling hatred in the young minds. But they never knew that there is no short cut to reach power except fulfilling the dreams of poor people. They dont need Ram mandir when they are hungry but good food and shelter.....and employment.

you are correct by manish on 22 May 2009

Hopefully, each citizen of india think same. If yes BJP would have come into power.
