Kolkata, December 7: On the backfoot over Nandigram, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has stoked another controversy by questioning the existence of Lord Ram.

"Ram was born in the imagination of poets and Ram Sethu is a natural formation under the sea," Bhatacharjee told a meeting to mark the 15th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid on Thursday.

He said the Sethusamudram project was being opposed by the Sangh Parivar on religious ground, but it was vital for economic development of the region.

Reacting to Bhattacharjee's remarks, state BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha today said the remarks were an attempt to appease the Muslim vote bank after the fiasco in Nandigram.

"Ram is a matter of faith and Communists had always hated godmen. Even they spread calumnies against Tagore and Swami Vivekananda," he said.

Bhattacharjee's remarks came months after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's similar plainspeak on the existence of Lord Ram which had generated a country-wide controversy.

All religion is based on myths, why pick on hindus? by DILIP /France on 07 Dec 2007

Mr.Das, you are deluding your self. History has taught us that religion, a belief system, has been used since the dawn of history, to fight wars, and access markets and resources, in the name of religion. The christians have done it,muslims have done it, Judaism has done it, Hindus have done it,you name it they have don it.Why chaalnge the raionals and mythology of Hinduism only why not explode the irrrationals and myths of islam? TheC.M. lacks courage and honesty!!.

Buddha questions Ram's existence by Anurag on 07 Dec 2007

What else can one expect from Communists whose gods all reside outside this country...in China and in erstwhile USSR. It is only in a soft state like India that somebody can get away with publicly questioning the very existence of the deity revered by millions in the country. And remember, these are the very people who supported Chinese agression in 1962 and still have not apologised for it. West Bengal CM will not try this stunt against the Muslims, possibly because he knows that he and his family will most probably be beheaded (maybe, on video) if he dares to do so.

You are elected for work for development of people and state by rags on 07 Dec 2007

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee shut your mouth. Work towards developing the state. Provide food and shelter for the needy once, increase the economy, let all the people get some job and lead good life. You are elected for better works than talking some shit.

Matters of faith by KLViswanathan on 07 Dec 2007

Why do poliicalparties discuss faith? I a democarcy a mandate is given to a political party for Governance and not to police or sit in judgement over matters of faith. Senior politicians and responsible political parties have to ecognise this factbeofre shooting their mouths off.It is also sad that trivial matters are highlighted by the press/media and matters of governance are given the go by. It is about time the pillars of democarcy stand upright and stabilise the Nation.

He is not HINDU. He should change his Religion by G S Kurmi on 07 Dec 2007

The comments is unwelcomed. Its hurts the majority community of India. If Mr Buddadeb have guts, can tell something about Muslim religion. Only Hindus are tolerating this type non-sense said Karunanidhi and now this Buddha. He ashamed to tell he is a Hindu. He should ask his mother(if she alive) whether his real father is real one.

Ram Setu and politics by V K Das on 07 Dec 2007

Mytholigy and history must not be confused and should be kept seperate. The former is a question of blind faith and it is futile to rationalise it or discuss it.No one questions how Jesus could be born of a virgin mother. It is better to leave such issues undiscussed. The trouble arises when parties like BJP want to exploit such beliefs for electoral purposes. That leads to such conflicts between faith and rational thinking. It is for the matured politicians to sort out such issues with tact and understanding.

Bamponth will make comnunal HIndoosthan heaven by bringing it under rule of Bongalis by J. Basu on 07 Dec 2007

Kudos to Budda for seclularism. All muslim will give bote to statesman Budda since muslims god is a real man born in history. It is greatness of Muslim that they do not keep photo of Mahoomet PBUH and still have historical proof he is God. Also Cristain who are super seclular will give bote to Bamponth and Budda since they also have historically born God whose name is Jezus and who is born as miracle from a vagina that never lost its hymen. Budda is also proved in history as God of comnunists like Mao, Marx Stalin Lenin KormaNeethi et al. who are most seclular and progressib democratic people of the world. Joy Bonglades.

Lord Ram born in imagination of poets: Buddha by Prakash on 07 Dec 2007

You should learn to respect Hindu sensibility. If not keep your mouth shut. by DILIP /France on 07 Dec 2007

Comrade Buddha, is utterly confused because when he was born he came by the "Tube".It is not surprising to hear such shamless uttering from an ignorant, who sits on his brain all the time.It is said, sometime it is better to keep one's mouth shut and let people assume you are a fool, rather tahn open your mouth and confirm that belief. Would you have the guts to challenge the myths of Islam? or is it easy and fashionable to kick around Hindus, because they are easy meat? Your sergeant major attitude needs to change, you are despicable. Do not treat Hindus as political football and some communist gimmick.

Greedy junks = CPM by S B Shetty on 07 Dec 2007

Budha, karunanidhi... I am really sorry for you guys. How ungrateful you all can be?. I think you must stop eating from your hands as it is been told by your parents (who might have been influnced by the books) instead follow your instinct and lick from the floor.

Kick them by Indi on 07 Dec 2007

So seetharam yechury should be renamed as "non existant yechury". So yechury is a nameless person then. After forcing taslima out of kolkota to appease extrimists muslims, by questioning Lort Ram, communal commies are out to appease muslims again. Kick these old asses in bengal, kerala, at the center along with communal congress and upa out of India and save India.

Budda by Prajapathi on 07 Dec 2007

This Budda must be eating from his rearhole. That is why he talks utter rubbish

Ram did not exist. So what! by Rajib Sengupta on 07 Dec 2007

If CPM had driven Taslima out of Kolkata because she had hurt religious sentiment of Muslims, the same logic should apply on Buddha now. Whether Ram existed or not, many people believed he did; and Buddha has no business to get into this controversy. Now people should demand his expulsion from West Bengal till he tenders a public appology.

RAMJI ki Sharan mein Ek Communist by Arun on 07 Dec 2007

Buddha comes to Ramji’s Sharan at last as he is unable to wash off the blood stains of poor helpless people of Nandigram that goons supported by the govt. May Lord Sri Ram give him his dues which I am sure he would even though he [Buddha] sees Ram as his foe.

The old man is more comic than clever ! by Sharad C. Misra on 07 Dec 2007

Buddha's belated enlightenment questioning the existence of Lord Ram is more comic than clever. Any fool would see that it is crude attempt to win over the Muslims alienated by the atrocities committed on them by CPI goons. Was Buddha in hibernation when Karunanidhi, the DMK Chef had similarly questioned the existence of Lord Ram and the UPA Govt. had to eat crow by withdrawing its affidavit in the apex court? Buddha's duplicity was exposed when he expelled Taslima from West Bengal and now he is making amends for his inexcusable blunders. We would urge the Hindus across India to condemn this man. In fact, let all the CPM activists bearing names starting with Ram should change their names if they are true to their conviction.
