Mumbai, March 17 The police on Monday have booked a 20-year-old man and his girlfriend from Mahim on the charge of abetting suicide of a girl.

According to the police, Jamila (name changed), 17, who was in love with one Naeem Qureshi, committed suicide after she had an altercation with Tasneem Khan (name changed) 18, who too had an affair with the man. Tasneem too tried to kill herself, but is recuperating at the Bhabha hospital.

Naeem, who works with a local cable operator in Mahim, told the police that he was in love with Tasneem for the last three years. However, according to him, Jamila had a one-sided interest in him for the last three years. All of them stayed in the Hari Zandi slum in Mahim.

“On Sunday, Jamila called up Naeem and asked him to meet her. The two went to the beach where they were spotted by Tasneem. The girls fought with each other and left only after Naeem pacified them,” said Senior Police Inspector V M Latpate of Mahim police station.

According to Latpate, when Naeem was having tea at Mahim bus depot at around 7 pm on that day, Jamila insisted on meeting him again. When he refused, she came to the depot by herself. “Naeem said that he asked Jamila to go home, but on the way he saw her buying something from a medical store. Soon after, Jamila consumed something, (her medical report is awaited) and her mother saw her in a dizzy state. She was then taken to Bhabha hospital where she died later,” Latpate said.

Meanwhile, Tasneem too consumed phenyl (a disinfectant) at her house after hearing of Jamila. “Before dying, Jamila gave a note to the doctor in which she stated that she was ending her life because of Naeem and Tasneem. We have booked both under Section 506 for abetting suicide. While, Naeem will be produced in court on Tuesday, action against Tasneem will be taken once she recuperates,” said Latpate. “We do not know about anything. At 3.30 am, police came to our house and arrested Naeem. We have no clue about what had happened,” said Naeem’s father.
