New Delhi, December 22: An exhibition of acclaimed painter M F Hussain, whose allegedly obscene portrayal of Hindu Goddesses had invited the wrath of Sangh Parivar, ran into rough weather in the national capital on Saturday after organisers received a threat purportedly from Bajrang Dal.

The India International Centre, where Hussain's 'Mughal India' painting series are on dispaly, suspended the exhibition for Saturday after it received the threats from Bajrang Dal, sources said.

The IIC had received the Bajran Dal threat which said it has to face ‘serious consequences’ if the capital's high-profile cultural organisation continued to exhibit the works of the controversial artist, they said.

A group of youth, claiming to be members of the Hindutva outfit, went to the IIC and threatened the officials that they would have to face consequences if they continue with the hosting of this show, sources added.

Bajrang Dal Delhi unit president Ashok Kapur claimed the outfit's youth had gone to the venue to enquire about the exhibition and had told the exhibitors that Hussain had insulted India's culture and his works should not be displayed here.

A decision whether to restart the exhibition, which contains 20 paintings permanently dispalyed at Fida Museum in London, will be taken at a meeting of the IIC Directors later.

'India is hard'- a harsh reality. by amit dutta on 27 Dec 2007

With the passage of time the tendency to see the things through the specs of religion or throgh own pre-conceived thoughts has intensified. To see clearly without any prejudice or the barriers that society has created over the years is a rare case in present world and moreso in present developing India.'India is hard ' as has been pointed by Naipaul , sadly, fits in the current situation where we find it tough to appreciate the works of artiststs like M.F.Hussain and Jatin das open mindedly. The attack on the exhibition is a shameful situation for a country where Khajuraho sculptures had been accepted long before.

Art and Blasphemy by Hary Nambiar on 25 Dec 2007

Salman Rushdie's "Satanic verses" was wrong. The cartoon in the Danish newspaper was wrong. Both of them should be banned. MF Hussiens nude paintings are wrong. Awarding him for excellence and exhibiting his paintings in an Art Gallery are patently wrong. I wonder, what would have been the result if Hussien had painted a nude picture of a Profet! I bet, lot of people, would have been killed and a lot of properties would have been destroyed. However, he would have been glorified in the west like Michael Angelo or Picaso or even be "Knighted." There are some social enemies everywhere, like Salman Rushdie, MF Hussien, that Danish Cartoonist (what is his stupid name)? What they am is more beef, more wine, more women and more merry, nothing else. Ignorant rascals.

The artist should have done better not to hurt the religeous sentiments. Not only Hindus, any relegeon.

Hussain stands condemned universally by Cogito_ergo... on 23 Dec 2007

Even if you take religion completely out of this, Hussain would stand condemned. Ask the depraved Hussain to paint Sonia and Indira in the nude.

MF Hussain a perverted man by GK on 23 Dec 2007

MF Hussain is a perverted man, he and his work should be banned all over for his outrageous insult of Indian culture. If MF Hussain he can paint his own Gods or Goddesses nude or in any postures he likes.

MF Hussain a perverted man by GK on 23 Dec 2007

MF Hussain is a perverted man, he and his work should be banned all over for his outrageous insult of Indian culture. I fully support Bajrang Dal for their standing. Kudos to them

Frreedom of religion by KK on 23 Dec 2007

Hindus are marching for Taslima -- why they are not doing the sme for Hussain. There are no freedom of speech if a Hindu wishes to convert to Islam or Christianity. They have to get permission from court. There is no freedom to practice. All people should be treated equally and respectfully.

has a corrupt mindset. by gus on 23 Dec 2007

Hussain is a paedophile and a muslim gundu, who likes tossing period.

Double standard by Syed Zainulabedin on 23 Dec 2007

Where is freedom of speech of BJP today? One side they support Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen and other side oppose FM Hussain. This is nothing but double standard.

MFH by Chandra on 04 Jan 2008

What double standard. We don't have to support every god damn muslim! Infact, I do not know why we need to go out of the way for Taslima either. I do not think any muslim would support any hindu against his own people...Atleast Taslima is not crude like MFH. He is the dirtiest, crudest man I can think of. Old dirty foggie

Double standard by Dee Shah on 24 Dec 2007

Mr.Syed is talking about double standard in BJP. Please don't make me laugh. Talking about secularity and double standard in India seems to be the issue of desperation. You do have single standard in the islamic countries which is creating quagmire around the world. It seems India should learn from you about a single standard. Any attempt to disrupt India's bright future will be harmful to you.

Double Standard by Versamedi on 23 Dec 2007

There is no double standard acted out by BJP. They are using the same one standard, you people are using around the world.

House arrest FM Hussain!

MF Hussain' paintings by sreenivas on 23 Dec 2007

M F Hussain appears to have nothing else to do except his disgusting activities of insulting religious sentiments of HINDUS supported and encouraged by the "feathers" of same such feather. Does he posses fundamental ability and courage to paint pictures from his own religeon?

M F Hussain's exhibition raises hackles of Bajrang Dal by Narain Kataria on 23 Dec 2007

India International Center, New Delh, should not encourage painter like M.F. Hussain who has offended the sensibilities of more than 900 million Hindus all over the world.

Hussain's paintings by V Kothari on 22 Dec 2007

I would like to suggest that Maqbool Fida Hussain should paint the prophet Mohammad. His pictures are available in the Iranian literature. This is one way people will be able to get rid of this deranged person.

Hussain stands secularly, universally condemned by Cogito_ergo... on 23 Dec 2007

Let us even try taking religion out of this. Ask the depraved Hussain to paint Sonia and Indira in the nude.

Durga i snot Urvasi by V Ram on 22 Dec 2007

Hello Vinay, your statement that,'Most of our Hindu temples portray our goddesses in total or partial nudity and in a very sensual way.'is totally wrong. What you see outside the temple walls is Gandharva/Yalsha/kinner's. Not Durga or Parvati or Sita! They will be inside santum sanctorium. If Hussain names his naked paintings as Rambha or Urvasi that is different. He is calling them as Durga and Sita. Most of the pseudosecular jokers and evangelical-controlled english media is misleading people comparing Urvasi/Rambha with Durga! Urvasi/Rambha were celestial dancers, not Vishnu/Shiva's consorts.I don't blame you, 50 -70 years of communist/congress propaganda in educational field, which they call as history is brainwashed lots of people like you.

Even if you take taking religion out of this, Hussain would stand condemned. Ask the depraved Hussain to paint Sonia and Indira in the nude.

M.F. Hussain - Artist or Not by Sudhir on 22 Dec 2007

M.F. Hussain's claim to artist fame is a joke. He is encouraged by pseudo-cultural organizations who pretend that his paintings are masterpieces. Hussain can never be half the painter that painters like Raja Ravi Varma were. His apology for paintings lack either beauty or meaning.

M.F Hussain's exhibition by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 22 Dec 2007

Hussain draws nude females and gives them names of Hindu goddesses. If this is to be termed as freedom of expression, let him draw nude female pictures and name them as his mother, wife or daughter. He dare not draw a picture of Prophet Mohammed because he knows the moment he does so his head will cut off with a saw by Muslim fundamentalists.

Hussain the Vulgarian by Cogito_ergo... on 22 Dec 2007

I am an atheist, and obviously cannot be a follower of Bajrang Dal. BUT, I have to thank Bajrang Dal for raising their voice -- on behalf of *Indian culture* -- against Hussain's OBSCENE, COARSE, INDECENT "paintings". This fellow ought to be put behind bars or sent to a lunatic asylum.

Islamization of Hinduism. by Vinay on 22 Dec 2007

It so ironic that people who oppose muslim fanatics wants Hindus to behave fanatic muslims!! Most of our Hindu temples portray our goddesses in total or partial nudity and in a very sensual way. Are we gonna raise hue and cry about it too and remove the idols?? Going at this rate, I'd not be surprised if that happens! We have our own tradition and culture and let's not be barbaric like the fanatics and fundamentalists.
