Chandigarh, February 18 The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh plans to commission a garbage processing plant at Dadumajra next month. The project was scheduled to be completed last December, but was delayed. Officials claim that the plant will be fully functional by March end.

With the completion of the project, Chandigarh will be the first city in the country to implement the provisions of Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. The commissioning of the project will also relive area residents of the smell from the dumping ground.

The plant is being set up to process garbage and produce Refused Derived Fuel (RDF). RDF, also known as pallets, will be used by the project developer for ‘in-house’ consumption in their cement plant.

The plant will process nearly 85 per cent of the municipal solid waste will be processed leaving nearly 15 per cent of inert material.

UT Adviser Pradip Mehra had visited the project site during the first week of December and was apprised about the delay in the completion of the project. Chandigarh mayor assured residents that the project would be completed soon.
