The MCD Standing Committee has instructed civic officials to stop the demolitions of fourth and fifth floors for one week, and has asked the Centre for an amnesty scheme providing relief to people facing demolitions in the meantime.

The High Court has ordered the demolition of properties not covered under Delhi Master Plan 2021 and other ordinances. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the onus for providing relief, therefore, rested with the Centre. The issue of demolitions in Delhi is continuing to generate much heat in MCD meetings. On Wednesday, BJP councillor and deputy chairman of the Standing Committee, Yogendra Chandolia, brought a resolution stating that since the Centre is not bringing in an amnesty scheme to save people from demolitions, the committee should instruct MCD officials not to go ahead with demolition.

Congress councillor and Leader of the Opposition in the House, Jai Kishan Sharma, however said, “The MCD should do its work and not blame the Centre.” In the end, the majority BJP Councillors passed Chandolia’s resolution after the one-week clause was added.
