Officials in the MCD — which will provide civic amenities during the Games in 2010 — said the youth would form core groups to monitor services like sanitation, streetlight maintenance, road repair and horticulture work.
They would also organise cultural programmes for the spectators and athletes, apart from playing the role of guides, officials said.
To begin with, the civic body is eyeing a tie up with Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, University of Delhi. The formal announcement will be made at 'Crescendo 08', the annual function of the college, to be held on February 14 and 15 at Shah Auditorium in Civil Lines, civic officials said.
The college festival will also host a discussion on 'Civic facilities and the role of the youth', where MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta is expected to be among the panelists.
“The Commonwealth Games are not just an end but also a means for us to make Delhi a world-class city. Youth participation impacts society in a major way. Our programmes relating to greenery and our drive against littering can benefit if we can take the youth along,” Gupta said.
“Shaheed Sukhdev college is a reputed institution. Its involvement in the work of the MCD is a step towards the ideal of corporate social responsibility,” Gupta added. The MCD plans to contact other colleges and NGOs for its preparations for the Games. “The present step is expected to provide impetus to civic amenities,” Gupta said.
