The MCI proposal for a “single common national entrance” examination was sent to the Health Ministry on June 24, pointing out that Supreme Court rulings have mandated a common entrance test. The MCI wants a common admission criterion to be adopted across the country. In its proposal, the MCI has said that the examination should be conducted by a national regulatory authority.
At present, some government colleges reserve 15 per cent seats for students from across the country and the remaining 85 per cent seats are filled by students from that particular state on the basis of a merit list.
The MCI wants a common examination on the lines of the All-India test conducted by the Government of India for government-run medical colleges in states for the pooled 15 per cent seats.
The proposal, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, states:
• There should be only one entrance exam for admission to MBBS course by all institutes across the country, which should be held in English and all scheduled languages.
• The Government should identify an authority for conducting the examination.
• The structuring should be such that it should be evaluated by a computerized mechanism to avoid manual/human interference.
• Admission to all MBBS courses in all medical institutes should be strictly made on the basis of inter se merit of the relevant applicant in the common entrance examination.
• A mechanism be evolved where a list of all students eligible in different states can be segregated from the total list of all eligible candidates. This could be used by state authorities to admit students eligible as per the admission criteria in respective state institutes.
• In institutes of All-India character including deemed universities, institutes owned and managed by the Central government, state governments, universities, local self government trusts/charitable societies and all other organizations, admissions will be based on merit obtained at the competitive national common entrance examination.

in maharashtra prsent sylabus of 12th science is not equivalent to the ncrt sylabus declared by mci.classes of 12th sci already started from 1st june11. one and half month over.it is very dificult to 12th sci student for preparation.because student has to prepare for board exam as per existing 12th sci maharashtra board sylabus and for mbbs entrance they have to prepare as ncrt sylabus.idea of keeping one common entrarce is good but due to above mentioned problem in maharashtra is requested to keep neet exam from may 2013.

ths is good .but medical council need 2 do more 2 increase seats in medical .like engenearing .as per population doctors r less in no. so they need 2 .increase it in lakh almost.like engenearing seats .which is 9 lakh
Is this proposal by MCI for a common entrance test only for MBBS or is it going to be for PG (MD, MS, etc) seats also? THough the article says that it is only for MBBS, it is not very clear if MCI has recommended it for both- MBBS
The idea of a single test for MBBS is very good. Govt does not have to anything extra. We already have AIPMT test being conducted as per the supereme court guidelines which is reliable and valid test and it is conducted in Ist phase as objective and in the second phase as objective. Govt. just has to empower this test and include all the 15% seats from private medical colleges or to make it like AIEEE.Manipal university also conducts a computerized enterance test which can be used for all the pvt colleges .Another suggestion, some preimer medical institutes like AIIMS, AFMC, CMC Ludhiana, CMC Vellor, BHU, AMU, Saint Johns Banglore take separate entrance test. All these inst. can also be asked to take a single entrance test so that trauma to the child and parents can be minimized. On an average a child appears in 15-20 exams which is huge financial, mental load and makes the time table very confusing.also result of one exam is bound to affect the performance of a chil
Its a good decision to take single entrance exam for medical colleges, but it will unfair to those students whose three attempt for AIPMT has been exhausted. They drop for another year in desire to become a doctor through state level pre medical exams. So i think this method of conducting exam should made from 2011 or either the limitation of attempts should be made off.

Education is the backbone of any society. India require a great change in the way Education has been commercialised by the businessmen and politicians turned educators selling degrees in the garb of providing education. One can buy MBBS or BDS degree from Private Institutions and deemed Universities without even attending college and just being present on the date of Examination for a fee of course. Mr. Kapil Sibal has atask cutout for him to have Quality in Education or let India take a back seat in world order. Not only do we require a merit based foolproof tamper free system of entrance in Higher education but also have an examination at the end of the degree to have a check at the compeletion of degree to know which institutions perform the teaching and which ones sell degrees . Check at the end is more important than at the begining as the end result of education will check the caliber of teaching and final assesment of the education process can be made.
I welcome this recommendation and strongly feel that the same method should also be adopted for other disciplines, viz. Engineering, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Management, etc. immediately.
