After hijacking Shiv Sena’s Marathi agenda, MNS wants to sustain the campaign with the free Marathi classes to the non-Marathis in the city.
“Marathi is official language of the state and non-Maharashtrian should at least know how to communicate in Marathi,” MNS district president (South Mumbai) Arvind Gavade told PTI.
Gavade has taken the initiative to start classes in Colaba, Girgaon, Chirabazar and Tardeo area as non-Marathi population is increasing in these areas.
MNS is planning to start the classes from March. There will be three lectures in a week and can be increased as per the demand, Gavade said.
MNS workers assaulted north Indians attending a rally organised by Samajwadi Party at Dadar, Shivaji Park on February 3. The violence later spread to other parts of the state.
Raj Thackeray in a meeting with party members few days back had said he wanted the non-Maharashtrian members to learn the language. The idea for classes was a result of this.

Yes, Nice move. Everyone in Maharashtra should atleast learn conversational Marathi. This should not be forced but migrants should take the initiative to learn Marathi and Marathi culture
It is nice move. I think the Hindi speaking migrants should make an attempt in learning Marathi and Maharashtrian culture. Marathi is not a difficult language. The problem with Hindi speakers is that they never learn a third language any time and since they speak Hindi they expect every Non-Hindi speaker to communicate in Hindi. Maharashtra should make Marathi mandatory in every school, this includes all English medium schools, ICSE, CBSE etc. Also make the Marathi taught more practical. No point in teaching High level classical Marathi
ah!! its me again.....a_migrant_fed_up_wid_dis_marathi_mnoos_shit....by the way do we need a passport and a visa to stay here in maharshtra.....please make it mandatory too....
In order to assimilate non-English-speaking migrants into the mainstream, US communities assist migrants in learning English. By following this practice, MNS appears to have begun a good measure. Several years ago, the US has also trained certain immigrant communities in civic practices. If necessary, MNS may assist in teaching Mumbai’s high culture and exemplary civic practices (e.g. lining up in orderly queues) also.
