Mumbai, May 20: It's a birthday gift Raj Thackeray is expected to love, but one that could well mean more trouble for the thousands of migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has decided to launch a 364-day ‘Hatt Puja’ or ‘remove puja’ campaign on June 14, when Raj turns 40, to counter the one-day ‘Chhat Puja’ Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has announced he will perform in the MNS stronghold this year.

The campaign would be aimed at migrants the MNS says encroach upon public property, set up kiosks or roadside businesses illegally, steal electricity or secure permits and licences to live and work in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas even though they may not be eligible.

Letters will be written to a range of government officials, including civic authorities and the police and traffic departments, to act against such migrants. MNS workers will pressure them regularly to show progress, according to party vice-president Haji Arafat Sheikh. Details of the campaign have already been circulated among MNS leaders and office-bearers, copies of which are with The Indian Express.

“We will start the campaign on Rajji’s birthday and ensure that by his next birthday he gets some relief from the ‘UP-Biharwallahs’ who have encroached and made the city unclean,” Sheikh says.

In his letter to MNS workers, Sheikh says: “Let them perform Chhat Puja for one day, we will conduct Hatt Puja for the remaining 364 days. Through this campaign we will get justice to Maharashtra.”

“How is that ‘outsiders’ set up stalls, steal electricity from street poles, encroach on our roads and cause problems to honest tax-paying citizens, and yet no action is taken against them? It is because the administration is hand-in-glove with outsiders that they thrive here,” he says. “If we start a campaign against the officials, they will be forced to take action against the encroachers.”

North Indian migrants performing Chhat Puja, besides celebrating Uttar Pradesh formation day, in Maharashtra has been a sore point for Raj and his MNS. The party claims such occasions are used by migrants to show their strength in their adopted land.

However, this has led Lalu to announce that he would perform Chhat Puja in November this year in Raj’s Shivaji Park area of Mumbai, which is also a stronghold of the Shiv Sena he walked out of. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has backed the RJD chief and said he too would join him in the prayers. Sheikh says the MNS has created “squads” of workers who would be on the lookout for encroachers. “Authorities will be given photographs of such illegal activities — encroachments on roads, unauthorised stalls, hawkers, stealing electricity, water — and complete details of the people involved. We will first request authorities to take action. However if they fail to do so in 15 days’ time, then we will do so in our ‘own way’,” the MNS leader adds.

Manoj Chavan, chief of the MNS Kaamgar Sena, the labour union wing, said the campaign would also target motor training schools as they are accused of securing driving licences for migrants even though they do not have the mandatory residential proof.

Thackrey Clan by Ashok Mehdiratta on 22 May 2008

We have been reading many stories about clan politics or family politics.BJP blaming congressfor bringing in this culture but their own leaders following the same culture. But none of these people ever taught their children to disintegrate the nation.Thackreys have done that.If this is what the Marathi culture is,then our Maratha history was wrong. If ThackreyParivar lived during Shivaji's regime,He would have ensured that this clan never progressed thereafter.Only people who can save Maharashtra from Thackreys are Maharashtrians only.If UnionGovt takes action,Goondas of SS,MNS will take on the streets and common people will be in trouble. Some of our readers will blame UPA and Sonia Gandhi for the same.I can only say that God should give some sense to these senseless people to save Maharashtra and help the nation.

Hatawo Raj thackery pooja by Shanker Phadnis on 21 May 2008

Change is possible by pinaki on 21 May 2008

The Maratha Empire started with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1627-1680) and from hundreds of square miles in 1674 to 386,102 sq mi. in 1760 encompassing whole of India. And from the First Anglo-Maratha War, ending in 1782 to the 1857 the first war of Independence Marathas were the single biggest threat to the British. It is not a surprise that since then the British Propaganda machines tried to divide. To regionalize Marathi people, and more than that their hate politics. But I don’t think anyone did runaway with Marathi people in all these years. It seems its because of the history of the people. But the hate campaigns are heart breaking. At the same, I think young people have an enormous power to change, I am sure the subcontinent and the world will be free from the crippling effects of divisive politics.

SET UP BRITISH TYPE FREE PUBLIC HOTLINES TO THE POLICE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY by DUS HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

TRUE, AS SAID BY HUM HINDUSTANI BELOW, THE CENTRAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS SHOULD SEEK SOME ADVICE AND GUIDANCE OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT AND THEIR POLICE AND SET UP A UK CRIMESTOPPERS LIKE FREE HOTLINES TO THE POLICE TO ENABLE THE PUBLIC TO PHONE THE POLICE WITH NAMES OR ANONYMOUSLY AND REPORT ANY CRIME THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE OR LIKELY TO TAKE PLACE. AND THE GOVERNMENT AND THE POLICE SHOULD ASSURE THE PUBLIC THAT THEY CAN REPORT ANY CRIMES WITHOUT ANY FEAR, THAT THEIR ANONYMITY WILL BE RESPECTED AND THAT NAMES OF THOSE REPORTING THE CRIME WILL NOT BE REVEALED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THEN ALL THOSE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BECOME VICTIMS OF BAL THACKERAY, UDDHAV THACKERAY AND RAJ THACKERAY'S AND THEIR GOONDA SQUADS' CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES WILL BE ABLE TO COME FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE AND REPORT THEIR CRIMES.

Well the joke is on RAJ by Shiva Gopalakrishnan on 20 May 2008

I do not support this goon or his cousin/uncle in any way.If he is going to monitor who is stealing electricity blah blah blah... He might be in for a surprise. Most of the thieves could be from SS or MNS. In which case he is going to send all these folks out of the state. Well, this guy is planning a sucide mission, come on let us help him plan it properly.I have no idea how such jokers are tolerated in a society like Mumbai.Dear Mumbaikars please show him the door during next elections and make sure the door hits him on his rearend on his way out

Raj Thakerey by ashutosh mishra on 20 May 2008

Doston agar yehi hota raha to kuch dinon baad is badtameez aur behoode Raj Thakerey ki Lathth Pooja hi honi baaki hai. He has the gumption to say that MNS workers ek do bottles nahin poora crate he phenkte Bachchan ke ghar par.To find employment for himself, he has used every dirty trick to gain power. Jis din Bihariyon ne Lathth Pooja shuru ki usi din iska bhoot utar jaayega, and only then the administration and courts step in. This crook has very cleverly appropriated the legacy of Mahatma Ranade, Gokhale, Tilak and Jyotirao Phule.I have no doubt his parents never wanted him to be conceived but this behooda somehow entered into this world as PHATE NIRODH KI AULAD

ALL THE 3 THACKERAYS HAVE THE BLOOD OF MANY INNOCENTS LIKE RAMESH KINI ON THEIR HANDS by HUM HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

The middle class Maharashtrians' disillusionment with the Shiv Sena began quite a while back with the Ramesh Kini case. In 1996, Bal Thackeray's nephew and heir apparent, Raj Thackeray was accused of complicity in the death of Kini, a resident of suburban Mahim. Kini's wife alleges he was murdered because one of Raj's 'friends' wanted the flat in which they lived. And Kini refused to sell cheap. Four years after the Sena was unanimously elected, enthusiasm had given way to disgust. Far from being the avenger of the common man that it so successfully projected itself as, the saffron outfit was and is viewed as a corrupt and lawless entity. The threats and forcible eviction of people from their homes didn't stop with Kini. Madhav Deshpande, the Sena's estranged founder member, alleges that the Kini affair is being played out over and over again in homes across Mumbai.

A 55-YEAR-OLD WIDOW FORCED OUT OF HER OWN HOME IN THE EXTORTION RACKETS RUN BY SHIV SENA AND MNS by HUM HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

Take the case of Shakuntala Gawadkar. In August 1997, this now 55-year-old widow was threatened by Shiv Sena shakha pramukh Rajendra Godbole that if she would not vacate her three-room flat at Dadar within 15 days, he would "take some action". He offered her Rs 1,000,000 (Rs 1 million) for the flat, which had a market value at least seven times that amount at that time 10 years ago. Gawadkar registered a complaint against Godbole at the Dadar police station. "He was not arrested," she says. "The police even refused to call him to the police station." Sadly, Gawadkar had to vacate the flat and move to Mira Road, about 50 kilometres away. Both Chaggan Bhujbal and Deshpande give instances of the way Sena extorts money. Even if it is a small sum like Rs 500. "Go to any Sena MLA for a letter for, say, your kid's admission to a local school and you will be charged money for it. There is nothing that the Shiv Sainiks will not do for a little bit of money," alleges Bhujbal.

SHIV SENA GOONDAS FORCED OUT TENANTS IN MATUNGA TO MAKE ROOM FOR PALATIAL FLAT FOR UDDHAV THACKERAY by HUM HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

Take the case of Kusumkunj, a building in suburban Matunga whose tenants were allegedly forced out by a builder to make room for a palatial flat for Bal Thackeray's son Uddhav Thackeray. "Even Bal Thackeray did not listen to us. We couldn't do anything. We had no choice but to leave. We can't believe this is happening in Dadar and Matunga, the areas in which the Sena was born and nurtured. All the families have or had some members in the Sena. If they can do this to us, their own supporters, what must they be doing to people who are critical of them?" says Sushobha Dhavle, whose 23-year-old son (now 33) quit the Sena after the Kusumkunj incident. According to the Sena's critics, the party when in power was still behaving as if it was in the Opposition. "They haven't realised the perils of power," points out Chhaggan Bhujbal, ex-Sainik and the leader of the Congress in Maharashtra's Vidhan Sabha. "The only thing that they are using power for is to do what they know best: extortion."

MOST DISGUSTING WORDS WERE UTTERED AGAINST SONIA GANDHI BY BAL THACKERAY : IS THAT MARATHI CULTURE? by HUM HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

The Sena and the government it ran in partnership with the BJP has managed to acquire an image of being commercially manageable. "Yeh log kaam bhi nahi karte, aur loot-te bhi hain," claims Sushil Wahadne, a former Sainik. Wahadne left the Sena in April 1998, after the Lok Sabha elections. "They refused to accept any responsibility for the debacle. The kind of language Bal Thackeray used against Sonia Gandhi was disgusting. Will any decent man talk like this about a woman?" Then there are the government failures: the state treasury is more empty then full; industry and investor confidence is at an all time low; the Sena and the BJP are constantly at war with each other; the crime graph is zooming; the administrative machinery moves in slow motion and the people in power themselves support acts of vandalism. Says the state's Culture Minister and one of Sena's founder members Pramod Navalkar: "This has been a learning experience for us. We had no previous experience."

SHIV SENA AND MNS HAVE MADE MILLIONS WHILE 60 LAKH PEOPLE IN BUMBAI LIVE ON JUST RUPEES 600 A MONTH by HUM HINDUSTANI on 20 May 2008

Hardcore Shiv Sainiks point out how the Sena is losing touch with the 'sons of the soil' and are regular fixtures in Bumbai's cocktail circuit. "They all carry mobile phones, the younger generation wear jeans, they have nice cars. And they all feel that they no longer need the ordinary Maharashtrian. How many people has the Shiv Udyog Sena got employment for?" says Wahadne, one of the ex Shiv Sainik. The Sena had promised 2,700,000 jobs by the year 2000. Critics claim that the only two unemployed youths who got jobs under the Sena regime are Bal Thackeray's son and nephew, Uddhav and Raj. The proof of the Sena's falling popularity graph is the failure of the Saffron Week organised from 9 to 16 October 1998. The celebration was aborted midway as the Sena couldn't even pack halls with a capacity of 300. The party blamed the unseasonal rains for the debacle. But it was a humiliating experience for a party which once drew crowds by the millions, rain or shine.

State Government by Satish Haldankar on 20 May 2008

This is the result of 'inaction' of the State Government and the Police. They do not have the guts or do not wish to take any action against MNS. It is shameful.
