Bhopal/Patna Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan did a Raj Thackeray when he said jobs in the state would not be allowed to be taken away by Biharis but backtracked after leaders from Bihar roundly condemned the controversial remark.

"Locals should be given preference in employment in the industries being set up in the state.. It should not happen that people should come from outside...Bihar and get the jobs here," Chouhan said fuelling a political row over the remark seen as unusual for his style of functioning.

Chouhan's remark while addressing a function at Satna, about 500 km from here, yesterday came in for attack from Congress, RJD and LJP with former chief minister Lalu Yadav and ally Ram Vilas Paswan leading the charge against the BJP leader.

Sensing the unease in Bihar, Chouhan clarified he was not against people from other states coming to Madhya Pradesh.

"I heartily welcome people coming (to MP) from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, South India, Punjab or from any other state," he said in Indore.

Chouhan said what he meant was that locals are sometimes not skilled workers and therefore must be given training by employers so that the people of the land should get a livelihood. "I made the comments in this context," he said.

Lalu termed the remarks as unconstitutional and called him "unstable". He demanded that Chouhan tender an apology.

LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan said, "The statement made by Chouhan is unfortunate... a person holding a top constitutional post should not not react in this manner... he should resign immediately."

MNS chief Raj Thackeray had spearheaded a campaign against north Indians in Maharashtra while pitching for ‘sons of the soil’ policy inviting criticism.

Who is dreaming of Great India by Sane Voice on 09 Nov 2009

Indian political leaders are doing a great job of dividing India into a number of small countries. This is China's dream. With political parties like BJP, Shiv Sena etc who needs enimies like Pakistan and China. If these gentlemen keep up doing what they are doing then surely India will subdivide into small countries. People of India should wake up and not fall for the parties who profess to be the saviour of Hindu religion or hindu culture. These parties are only have one motive and that is their own power and to hell with the country. Since the defeat of BJP, this wonderful party has not made any comments on the state of the economy or the nation. They are too busy in thier own power struggle and care very little for the people of India. Communists are busy supporting Maoists and care less for Indian future. they oppose any development issues and support no one for national interest. Why not just stand out with a board "Welcome China and Pakistan we are ready for slavery".

was India one country by Y.S.Chandrashewkhar on 08 Nov 2009

culturally India has allways been one country since 4000 yrs. one finds a person from the nothern most part of India visiting a temple in kanyakumari and vice-versa. Hinduism is not dogmatic. the idea of one god formless but also with forms is the basis. that everything that exists is only a manifestation of god makes it the most tolerant country. but if others dont reciprocate singing Iswara alla terenam becomes stupid.

The dream of Greater Bharat by Indian on 07 Nov 2009

We have to salute RSS, BJP ,Shiv Sena etc for creating a sense of brotherhood in the entire nation in terms of Religion and other communal factors. Now their power hungry ministers will create Greater MP, Greater Gujarat, Greater Karanataka..and so on. Sounds great keep going Mr Bhagwat, Mr Advani, Mr Naidu, Mr Modis etc. I think Gujaratis are having a better life and future in America and other parts of the country rather than in Gujarat. Indians have a better deal , than in India under the power of BJP. It is like Afgjans living under the guns of Taliban or Iranians living in the hell of religious leaders. But history has shown the door to this religious fanatics and mad people.

Datta by Bratati on 07 Nov 2009

I wonder what would have been the so called Bihari messiahs' reaction had Bihar job market been overcrowded with outsiders ?

Bangladeshis by Sans on 17 May 2010

Dont worry after a decade or so the bangladeshis will start invading bihar and that would be the best part of all!

Divide till noting is left by Felix Rozario on 07 Nov 2009

Dont' we have enough divisions in the world, the rich , the poor, the whites, the blacks, the filthy rich and the poorest of the poor, international borders and the armed conflicts that take place there, and in our own country the numerous divisions based on caste creed language region culture and what not. Now do want to divide the countryfurther by caliming that Bihar is for Biharis, Maharasthra for Marathis, Tamil Nadu for Tamils etc till we reach a stage when noting is left of this great nation. Creations of states on linguistic lines was indeed the biggest blunder after independence.LET NOT politicians with parochial inclinations be allowed to divide this country further.Vote them out before it is too late.

Shivraj's Bihar by JK Singh on 07 Nov 2009

Hahahhaahh..WHat a joke..Shivraj..who wants to be in your state? And please do not misguide people by saying you should give jobs only to locals and not to Biharis. Are you providing jobs? Are you doing anything for development.. Come on ....give me a break...

Biharis everywhere by Ashok on 07 Nov 2009

The thing is this: Laloo and Paswan has made Bihar into an industrial banjar-land. So, no wonder, Biharis have to migrate to anywhere to survive and the locals feel threatened -- be it in Maharashtra or MP. However, before Lalloos ask Chauhan anything, they should answer why Biharis have to seek jobs outside? They are the biggest culprits, posing as the messiahs of Biharis.

The Chief Minister of MP must GO. by NP Singh on 07 Nov 2009

Backtracking or tendering an apology by a person of the stature of the CHIEF MINISTER of a state must not be allowed to get away for free for saying what he said which was NOT ONLY anti national but also Unconstitutional.Such leaders are the real threat to the Nation from within.AND must be gotten rid of as soon as possible for the sake of good health of the nation.RIGHT.???

Locals to have opportunities by Ram on 07 Nov 2009

The MP CM has talked about priority for Locals in Jobs. There is nothing wrong in it. Every country or State should take care of those who have voted them to power and keep their Growth as the first priority. It is simply failure of UP and Bihar states to have neglected their own people. The Jobs could only be spared to migrants, if their is a shortage of skillset.

shivraj comment on employment in MP by ramesh kumar on 07 Nov 2009

Thanks to the Congress for allowing such sentiments to grow. How were states reorganized?Indian express used to be a bold paper, now only a congress mouthpiece. CONGRESS IS REALLY A GREAT, RULE AT ALL COST, PARTY!

Locals get preference but migrants must not be denied opportunities. by Boby Mehta on 07 Nov 2009

Are Laloo, Paswan and Congress saying that Biharis and UP people get preference over local people ? Why Nehru created 'linguistic states' ? When I was in Karnataka and was trying to buy land to develop a five star resort one of Moily's chamchas had said "its better you go north, South is not for you", it is not a news because a Congress goon was the CM. I am from Punjab, though I spent 15 years of my 18 years in India in Himachal but I can not buy land because I am not Himachali but Muslims and Christians from Bihar, UP and Karala are crawling everywhere in Himachal. If migrants get all the jobs where locals should go ?

Partially correct. by prasad Tidake on 07 Nov 2009

Whatever Shivraj Chauhan said is correct. It is high time that minister of UP and Bihar should be ashamed of themshelves that they are unable to create enough jobs in their own state. So that no one move from there. Infact what they are doing is support Extortion, Maoist, Monopoly not allowing industries to develop, not concentrating on Female Education (Critical) and still sticking to old customs. Its high time for them to think of these things. Only giving speaches does not serve the purpose. And also dont show the stats let the people decide where they stand.

Shame on such a leader by Jay on 07 Nov 2009

Better learn from these lines from Obama-"...Internationally competitive standards because these young people are going to be growing up in an international environment where they're competing not just against kids in Chicago or Los Angeles for jobs, but they're competing against folks in Beijing and Bangalore,".

At least MP CM knows his duties as a CM of a state. by Jatin on 07 Nov 2009

Switzerland has 3 different cultures/languages (German, French and Italian) in different kantons (states) and all are protected by federal and local laws. Now Swiss is one of the most peaceful countries to live in. Same is true for many strong, prosperous nations world wide. India never had/have uniform culture, language etc as our social evolution was different (than that of USA, where indigenous culture and people are long sidelined). It is the DUTY of local politicians to protect the interest of local people first. No body goes to Mumbai or Kolkata to %u201Cenrich%u201D the culture or economy there. They go there ONLY for their own interest and all such so-called %u201Cenrichment%u201D, as well as deterioration, is a by-product. I did not come to US to enrich USA. USA allowed me to enter simply because it needed me. If USA needs people, it has must remain attractive and that%u2019s up to the Americans, not Indians. I fully support MP CM. At least he knows his duties as a CM of a state.

Don't blame NRI's by Raja on 07 Nov 2009

I don't know why people like you always blame NRI's for unnecessay issue. Yes, he is right NRI's here just don't earn money and spend here, we all send our savings back home and this is also one of the reasons for cash flow... All other foreign nationals earn here and spend here, but Indian are the only one's who don't invest here and send the money back home..... Infact NRI's have more concern towards to the Nation than some of the people out there in India. Just see the website hits on Ibnlive,NDTV, Timesof India, Hindustan Time and Indian Express, i am pretty much sure most of the hits comes from out of the country. We are trying hard to move as many jobs to offshore in India...I am sure people like you will never understand us....don't make us to feel " Not Required Indians"

UP AND BIHAR ARE IN NEED OF THEIR OWN RAJ THACKERAY by mks on 07 Nov 2009

There is so much being said about the eastern upites and the biharis but so far there has been no composed response from the people of that part of our country. I have the following suggestion for them: 1. Vote for those netas who espouses up and bihari regionalism. 2. Why we do not hear about any SEZ other than NOIDA that too has an identity separate from UP. 3. The netas of UP and Bihar get elected and then start eyeing the cabinet seats in central government. 4. UP and Bihar need netas like Raj thakeray, Mamta Banerjee , Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi, Chandrababu these leaders might be regionalistic in their approach but they have improved the lot of their state and people. 5. There are a number of IT professionals and in other fields, then why UP and Bihar do not have an SEZ of its own. 6. UP and Bihar dont get goodies earned by the other states as somebody has commented, but these two states have lost out to others because of its greedy, lazy and dumb netas.

Are we United? by Abhishek on 07 Nov 2009

I am not here to blame anybody for who said what, but then request everybody not to fight amongst each other (We all are born to the same Mother Earth %u2013 INDIA) - this is our Country, and everybody should have the freedom to work across India for livelihood! We are a part of Country, let's not be biased; let the qualified survive by getting nice job anywhere across India, and please stop judging people on caste, language, religion or so. God bless all! Let us spread the message of love and peace!

What has Lalu and Paswan done for Bihar? by shaan on 07 Nov 2009

Lalu and Paswan robbed Bihar for so many years that Bihar has been reduced to the garbage dump of India. Now they are shouting when somebody wants to restrict the large scale migration of Biharis.

Divided India by Indian on 07 Nov 2009

When I was a kid and read history book, specially Revolt of 1857. I was amazed, how we were occupied by East India company, various foreign rulers and there was always a reference to that we were not united so everyone took advantage of ours. It was difficult to relate to it as a kid becuase I always grew up with kids from different state and religion and never ever thought about that. When I read the comments on the forum it really makes me sad about how we think. During my childhood, I was always angry with Gandhi Ji and Nehru Ji that they have let India divide and just to convince myself, I thought it might be because they were selfish. I realize now that they have done right thing otherwise none of the brothers will be happy. If every Indian thinks this way, I think now every state should be a country and other state should apply for Visa to work. I don't think we are Indians anymore.

Re: Divided India by Ashish on 07 Nov 2009

What kind of douche bag are you? India was never United for over 4000 years until the British came. Even the Mughals ruled with terror and oppressed the local population with torture and maiming. All previous rulers before British were useless barring the golden period under the Guptas in North and Cholas in South. There was no reason to rebel against the British who gave modern India the twin boons of western education and united identity ... Go get some education

Freedom of Work! by George P. Joseph on 07 Nov 2009

Who wanted really freedom? Study history. Erstwhile Rulers of scattered India who were put under the servility service of highly cultured and modern weaponized British rule. While erstwhile rulers lived with ancient culture, weapons and subjects were under bondage. Masters became slaves who want liberation, freedom and independence. A common Indian sees British and erstwhile Indian Rulers are equal. Beneficiaries of British rule are Rulers, their followers who now live in British Style. Coolies were enjoyed life with remuneration from British though presently they have to tumult for daily needs against Indian-British. All Indians have become cultural slaves of British and patriotism have become a commodity that can be easily transacted with anybody including the Hicks to the Top Leaders though they are blaring. When dark side come in to light, World may be astounded.

UNITY IN 1857 by NAVIN ASTI on 07 Nov 2009

In 1857people remained united because there was no Congress, which is the root of all divisive policies.By minority appeasement ,Congress has made minorities fanatic and majority gets provoked due to step-motherly treatment. Moreover Congress has managed with Media for this ugly activity. So the root cause is Congress. As soon as Congress is burnt out to salvation, every thing will be in order.

Only If Shivraj knew by Keval on 07 Nov 2009

ONly if Shivraj knew number of people from MP working in other states or even abroad. But there is not use of blaming him. Put constitutionality aside, let him understand the benefit of letting people from other state come and work in MP. And also let him understand the disadvantages of it to his voters, and take action to correct them. He can take the giant step of privatising ITIs, or encourage opening private training courses more aligned with the contemporary needs for his voters. And I think Shivraj is a brilliant guy, compared to many others who ruled the state or even Lalu etc. He has ralized and retracted it, instead of making it prestige issue.

Minnows as Leader by arvind shukla on 07 Nov 2009

As per comments listed above, people from Bihar( and possibly UP) should not be allowed to work in other states, then sovereignty of India has to be replaced by sovereignty of Bihar

What's wrong with our leaders? by vishal raghuvanshi on 07 Nov 2009

Mr. Chauhan are you living in a fool's paradise? Which jobs are you talking about. Last time I checked Bihar is an integral part of our country and who the heck are you to stop the people from moving to MP (if only there are any jobs to begin with) for work. It is high time that our so called leaders concentrate more on work and less on dividing people.
