Kolkata, May 12 The CPM MP Lakshman Seth has complained to the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force against Deputy Inspector General Alok Raj.

During the first phase of the panchayat polls on Sunday, Raj had refused to take orders from Seth in a telephone call, which had been aired by television channels.

Acting with the full backing of CPM’s state headquarters, Seth, parliamentarian from Tamluk, East Midnapore, of which Nandigram is a part, today wrote to CRPF Director General VK Joshi about Raj’s behaviour. Copies of the letter were sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and the chief of West Bengal Police, AB Vohra.

“I have said that suitable action be taken against Alok Raj,” Seth told The Indian Express on Monday. “I could have called up the DG CRPF himself,” Seth said, “but I gave him (Alok Raj) respect.”

Benoy Konar, CPM central committee member, said Seth had acted within his rights in calling up Raj. “He did nothing wrong by reminding Alok Raj of his duty,” Konar said.

On Sunday, Seth had called up Raj on his cellphone and ordered him to keep himself and the CRPF confined to their camp.

A flabbergasted Raj, switching his mobile handset to the speakerphone mode to make the conversation public, had sought to remind the MP that the administration and definitely not an MP could issue orders to the CRPF.

Seth, not knowing that the conversation was being picked up live by TV channels and other people around Raj, had continued to speak belligerently. Seth said Raj had acted unlawfully by turning a private conversation into a broadcast.
