MPs working overtime to finish democracy: Somnath

New Delhi, February 28: "You are all working overtime to finish democracy in this country", a visibly angry Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee burst out seeing proceedings being disrupted in Parliament for the third consecutive day over the farmers' issue.

Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day after Opposition members raised slogans demanding loan waiver to farmers.

"It is matter of great sorrow...on the one hand, you are asking for more sittings..so many notices have been given by so many honourable members. These important matters cannot be discussed. The discussion on the motion of thanks on the President's address is to start today," Chatterjee said in the Lok Sabha regretting that the members were "not willing to work".

"You are working overtime to finish democracy in this country," he remarked when members turned a deaf ear to his repeated pleas to allow the House to take up important business.

Finding the members in an unrelenting mood, Chatterjee said "with great sorrow, sadness and resentment, I am forced to adjourn the House".

With an eye on the likely farmers' package being announced in the budget tomorrow, the political parties have been jockeying to position themselves as being responsible for securing it.

The only redeeming feature in the House was that Finance Minister P Chidambaram was allowed to present the Economic Survey 2007-08 without any disturbance.

Finishing Democracy? by R.Balasundaram on 28 Feb 2008

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 28 Feb 2008

In a democracy politicians reflect people as they are elected by them. The success of any democracy depends on cohesiveness between politicians and people. It is very successful in Scandivania, and some of there social reforms for employment, health, women has been taken by many countries. The people in this part knows better and it is not successful in some places as people there still needs to know.

Hey,whats wrong with you? by "Nautankee" on 28 Feb 2008

Sir, "Dilip" from "France" should be moved to Darfur, because his mentality suit this place.Earlier he used to comment like a "Frenchmen", but day by day his id seems to reveal that he is from "kaala bazar", opp.Kalimandi near "kaala road".

Time to move to Cuba. by DILIP/FRANCE on 28 Feb 2008

Here is the rub,the irony is a communist miscreant championing DEMOCRACY and pontificating to the lawlwess custodian of Democracy. is this sanctimonious hypocrisy, I wonder?????.

Our commies by Lakshmi on 28 Feb 2008

What is wrong with the comments of Dilip? Our communists believe in China, Russia, Cuba and North Korea style governments. If there is a normal business deal with the US, they call that as a 'sell-off', imperialism and what not. If there is a good for nothing agreement with Cuba, then it is hailed by these commies as a great act. All the commies should be dumped in the arabian sea.

President and Speaker should have powers to debar such hooligan MPs and they should not be allowed to contest elections again. Shame on such MPs. Communists should know that communism is dead all over the world. See Kerala - except for tourism, it is rotting in all respects.
