New Delhi, February 28: "You are all working overtime to finish democracy in this country", a visibly angry Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee burst out seeing proceedings being disrupted in Parliament for the third consecutive day over the farmers' issue.

Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day after Opposition members raised slogans demanding loan waiver to farmers.

"It is matter of great sorrow...on the one hand, you are asking for more sittings..so many notices have been given by so many honourable members. These important matters cannot be discussed. The discussion on the motion of thanks on the President's address is to start today," Chatterjee said in the Lok Sabha regretting that the members were "not willing to work".

"You are working overtime to finish democracy in this country," he remarked when members turned a deaf ear to his repeated pleas to allow the House to take up important business.

Finding the members in an unrelenting mood, Chatterjee said "with great sorrow, sadness and resentment, I am forced to adjourn the House".

With an eye on the likely farmers' package being announced in the budget tomorrow, the political parties have been jockeying to position themselves as being responsible for securing it.

The only redeeming feature in the House was that Finance Minister P Chidambaram was allowed to present the Economic Survey 2007-08 without any disturbance.

Lok sabha speaker need to be tough with the erring MPS by P.P. TALWAR on 29 Feb 2008

Being in full agreement with Hon'ble speaker Somnath Chatterjee, the shameful and disgusting behaviour displayed in the parliament by the political parties in opposition viz. BJP, Left front and other rif-rafs of smaller regional parties, one wonders whether these MPs can justifiably call themslves democractic. With the sole aim of cornering the ruling congress led UPA government, the opposition parties are wasting huge public funds in stalling the proceedings of the house by staging frequent walk-outs. Hon,ble speaker should be tough in the parliament with the erring MPS of opposition parties by enforcing "no work, no pay" to teach them a lesson.

MP's Behaviour in Parliament by Babuchandra on 29 Feb 2008

How many of the MP’s can be called “honourable members” of the parliament? How many of the MP’s are involved in criminal cases and amassing wealth in dubious ways? How on earth you can expect them to show civilised behaviour in Parliament. Shame on Indian democracy! Hon. Speaker should publish the background of all MP’s. People of this country have the right to know.

Good Communists by V Raman on 29 Feb 2008

I dislike the communist ideology to the core. But there are some decent human beings who unfortunately happen to believe in that failed ideology. Mr. Somanath Chaterjee is one of them. Thank god, all communists are not like Karat, Yechury or that scum, some Raja. Many times, communists after realizing the shortcomings of the failed system change and become good democracy advocates. Ex. Sudheendra Kulkarni of BJP!

MPs working overtinme by Ashok on 29 Feb 2008

I agree with Ramesh Kumar says -- that Somnath Chatterjee, his past behaviour and his party do not endorse the best values in democracy. So let him stop lecturing others.

Fiinishing of Demcracy by Varinder Sarin on 28 Feb 2008

Mr. Somnath Chatterjee is right that some MPs are doing overtime to finish democracy. It is true that "A man is Known by the company he keeps" as such CPM and other leftists are close to China and as such they working overtime to skuttle the democracy. Mr, Somnath is a speaker and hence maintaining the tradition of neutrality he blamed his own CPM and other leftists MPs working over time to finish democracy. Hats off to Hon;able speaker.

Indian Politicians by Anant on 28 Feb 2008

It is idiotic to make rude comments about some one who has said the truth. It does not matter what party the speaker belongs to and he is absolutely right in condemning the idiots who go to the parliament to make trouble. Indian people and the opposition parties have a wrong impression of democracy. They think that the job of the opposition is to create havoc to bring down the government in power. Opposition has a duty to work in the parliament for the good of the nation and debate the matters for the national interest only. Boycotiing and shouting to stop the working of the parliament is certainly not in the interest of the nation or the people these idiots are supposed represent. These guys waste public money and do bugger whole for the nation. It is high time that India make a rule that absolutely no one can stand for election unless he or she has a good knowledge of international affairs and holds atleast a degree in political science or general studies. These so called politicians come out of the cow dung and want to represent the nation. Stop causing problems for the nation and get in line to work for the nation and its people.

Somnath by Raj on 28 Feb 2008

KILLING DEMOCRACY by madu on 28 Feb 2008

THIS SPEAKER IS NOT FIT TO BE IN CHAIR EVEN A DAY AS HE DOES NOT NO HOW TO CONDUCT PROCEEDINGS

Shame on MP's by Sujata on 28 Feb 2008

Most of commentators here look at everything from their biased glasses of politics. What Somnath is saying is absolutely correct. If the opposition members have any issues then they should discuss them properly. Creating noises and stopping the proceedings of the Parliament is undemocratic.Shame on all who disturb the proceedings.

Shame on MPs by Raghu on 28 Feb 2008

I think you are not correct. His party never allows a democratic processes and have no belief in democratic processes. In the states where they are strong(Fortunately only 3), if they call a bandh/hartal they will force every one to observe bandh. They have never allowed any democratic processes. It is very apt to say 'Pot calling the Kettle Black'

Finishing Democracy? by R.Balasundaram on 28 Feb 2008

When he was in the opposition, what was Somnathji doing? realisation has become rather too late for him and he conveniently forgets his past record!

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 28 Feb 2008

In a democracy politicians reflect people as they are elected by them. The success of any democracy depends on cohesiveness between politicians and people. It is very successful in Scandivania, and some of there social reforms for employment, health, women has been taken by many countries. The people in this part knows better and it is not successful in some places as people there still needs to know.

Hey,whats wrong with you? by "Nautankee" on 28 Feb 2008

Sir, "Dilip" from "France" should be moved to Darfur, because his mentality suit this place.Earlier he used to comment like a "Frenchmen", but day by day his id seems to reveal that he is from "kaala bazar", opp.Kalimandi near "kaala road".

Time to move to Cuba. by DILIP/FRANCE on 28 Feb 2008

Here is the rub,the irony is a communist miscreant championing DEMOCRACY and pontificating to the lawlwess custodian of Democracy. is this sanctimonious hypocrisy, I wonder?????.

Our commies by Lakshmi on 28 Feb 2008

What is wrong with the comments of Dilip? Our communists believe in China, Russia, Cuba and North Korea style governments. If there is a normal business deal with the US, they call that as a 'sell-off', imperialism and what not. If there is a good for nothing agreement with Cuba, then it is hailed by these commies as a great act. All the commies should be dumped in the arabian sea.

Mannerless MPs by Rahul Iyengar, Bangalore on 28 Feb 2008

President and Speaker should have powers to debar such hooligan MPs and they should not be allowed to contest elections again. Shame on such MPs. Communists should know that communism is dead all over the world. See Kerala - except for tourism, it is rotting in all respects.

Manner less politics for Cash and vote by Anil on 28 Feb 2008

Both sides of coin are same, Some people are making Hooligan, other instigate them, You must know that these Congresses and Comunists are very dangerus, they do further worst if you allow them. they work for votes as well as money. once you deal with them then only you will know, These BJP wallas are just Students they are still learning

You are working overtime by S.Gowrishankar. on 28 Feb 2008

Dear speaker, ever since you occupied this office no business has been taking place. Please quit. Do not talk of democracy which is not a part of the dictionary of communists. As the name suggests, as speaker of the Lok Sabha, you speak a lot nothing more. You dont allow others to speak.

Soma by Rajaram on 28 Feb 2008
