Ranchi Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda was on Monday arrested by the state Vigilance Commission, nearly two months after a case was registered against him in a multi-crore hawala scam.

"We have reached at a stage when his arrest was necessary. We had taken the arrest warrant from the competent court," Inspector General of Police, Vigilance, M V Rao said.

38-year-old Koda, who is being jointly investigated by the vigilance commission, Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate, was arrested from the Chaibasa district of the state.

Koda had repeatedly avoided appearing before the Enforcement Directorate and the state vigilance commission in connection with the disproportionate asset and the Prevention of Money Laundering case against him and his close associates. Sources in the ED said the Directorate will also join the questioning of the former CM.

During raids on his premises, the IT department had claimed to have found evidence of hawla transactions and illegal investments running into more than Rs 2,000 crore. The Enforcement Directorate had registered a case against him on October 10.

What difference would it make if the money in Swiss bank is in some name other than Madhu Koda by jas on 01 Dec 2009

The big thieves of Congress and mad monkeys of BJP are pestering Koda only because they truly believe that the money he stole was their's to loot. I think he should be allowed to keep it. Afterall what difference it makes to ordinary Indian if the same is money in a different name in some Swiss account?

These Gods/ God Loving Idiots do not deserve any better. by Jas on 01 Dec 2009

People of india don't seem to get concerned or outraged about anything other than their caste or religion. Talk about constructing some stupid temple or demolishing about some equally stupid mosque, you get millions on street ready to kill or die. A story about a big thief/politician stealing their money, hence killing their present and their children's future is accepted as way of life, a routine happening. Do these idiots deserve anything better than what thet get? I think not. The number of posts on this story and hundreds of those on involvement of BJP politicians in demolition of mosque, only few days ago explains everything.

Corruption, what a boring subject ? by Chintamoni on 30 Nov 2009

Even if congress did not arrest Madhu Koda, it could won the assembly election in Jharkhand. The people in general have already accepted the corruption, prise rise, farmer's suicide and austerity drama as normal happenings of the coutnry and voted them to power in Delhi and ratified in the just concluded Maharashtra assembly election. Again they will gain power in Jharkhand and everything will be dumped in a pit.Koda will be minister. It is the irony of Indian democracy that only congress party has all the right to role the country with mere 25% votes. Our system has no value or importance of the opinion of the majority people(75%) people of the country. So,govt unnecessarily should not waste the tax payers money in controlling the corruption activitiees. Poeple of India will have to wait for US type 2 party system of democracy with presidential system & strong govt. free from all family affairs.Only then the culprits of all types could be punished, where nation will be at the top of all.

masses sanction by rajiv kumar on 30 Nov 2009

In present scenario these sort of scams doesnot draw puplic apathy. At sociological level these sort of corruption practices has been adopted by the general masses. This is the biggest irony.

five star treatment for him by vivek on 30 Nov 2009

He will get 5 star treatment in jail. Operate from within jail, if at all convicted. The law of land needs to be strong. And if corruption is removed, these people who thrive on corruption will automatically shrink and die. But who will bell the cat? Surely not congress, under whose patronage and rule of 60 years, corruption has flourished and has become an epidemic.

Anti corruption drive or politics? by Rajesh on 30 Nov 2009

What an opportune time to arrest Koda when the state election is in full swing!! This case is definitely politically motivated.

Does Arrest is required? by Ajay Nath on 30 Nov 2009

Does arresting of Madhu Koda was required? It is has more symbolic effect which Indian investigating agencies are using without tightening lose ends of their case so that it could be shown that they are doing something. What purpose his arrest will serve? It is a financial crime, investigative agencies should try to gather as much as possible documental evidences & prosecute him in the court of law. When you claim that you have evidence of disproportionate assets why don't you chargesheet him, let the fast track courts decide the matter or agencies are punishing him before any judgement. I think these arresting technique is used by incompetent colonial mindset investigators to hide their incompetence regarding leading the investigation towards the logical end. Or any political game is played in the back of all these events because it is well known that how much Jharkhand congressians are white cows?

1 million dollars per month for doing nothing by YD on 30 Nov 2009

5,500 crores are equal to 23 million US dollars. Not bad for not doing anything for 23 months. Now how much for Congressis who ruled India for 55 years and did nothing.

All are corrupt to their inner bone. by Boby Mehta on 30 Nov 2009

Madhu Koda has all the qualifications to be senior minister in Congress government like Moily. It seems he didn't crawl in the feet of Italian lady, so, this case. But nothing to worry, the same Congress will resque him.

KODA's Arrest by Rajesh Vyas on 30 Nov 2009

Koda has been arrested but he will get bail in the next twenty four hours or less. What is a mere Rs. 4000 crores anyway? We are after all a close to a TRILLION DOLLAR ECONOMY?? The amount allegedly swindled by KODA is Chicken Feed!!!!! Isn't It???

Corruption in Indian Politics by G.R.SRINIVASA RAO on 30 Nov 2009

Which ever party is in power, nothing is going to happen to the corrupt politicians. The arrest and other actions are all eyewash to dupe the public. when we got so many corrupt politicians, Madhu koda case is one more addition.

Slow pace of investigation by Robin Munda on 30 Nov 2009

The slow pace of investigation in Koda scam suggests that it has been propped up keeping in view the assembly elections in Jharkhand. The people of Jharkhand know that nothing will happen after the elections. The people involved in this scam will be more confident and defiant after surviving this ordeal.

Where is Rule of Law by C.Sasidharan on 30 Nov 2009

Our Constitution Right to Equality - all laws will be equal to all and all citizens will be treated equal before the law - but this kind of selective applicability of law is making mockery of law of the principle enshrined in the Constitution - means he should have arrested as soon as the revelations have started pouring in with proof and evidence C.Sasidharan, Vikaspuri, New Delhi

Madhu Koda's Arrest by Rajesh Vyas on 30 Nov 2009

The important question is not the arrest of Madhu Koda. The point of greater importance is--Would the same leniency have been extended to an ordinary citizen accused of the crimes similar to those allegedly committed by Madhu Koda. Let us face it, our democracy has strange ways--The rich and the mighty, particularly the politicians of the World's Largest Democracy has different rights/yardsticks and the law is applied to them differently. Needless to say we are not a nation of laws, we are a nation of politicians who are allowed to go scot-free for big crimes. The entire political fraternity stinks!!!

Nothing is going to happen! by Vijay on 30 Nov 2009

With the Congress in command, nothing is going to happen to the corrupt politicians as all of them belong to the sam ecategory. The arrest is an eyewash so that the fury of general public and the opposition will be reduced. Our memories are short. When Quatrochi could be left scot free after so many years of investigation and spending of public money by our very competent(?) CBI, When cases of corruption and disproportinate assets still exist against Mayawati, Laloo, Mulayam and scores of other politicians, Madhu Koda is only one more addition to the list. Long live the corrupt governments of India who are solely responsible for the plight of the common Indian.

PLIGHT OF COMMON INDIAN by N.ASTI on 30 Nov 2009

All cases, mentioned are known to the public before last general election and Koda before last by-elections.Even then the same common foolish Indians brought Congress back in power. So Indians of all types want corrupt politicians to rule this Great NATION.This is the fate of Great India, not Indians

Disproportionate Assets of Politicians by Rajesh Vyas on 30 Nov 2009

Nothing will ever happen to all the politicians that you have listed in your comment. You are too naive if you believe anything will ever happen to them. THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAWS!!!! Laws are meant for smaller mortals (CHILDREN OF LESSER GODS!!!!)like us.
