Till now, Haryana had to depend on the forensic labs of other states for getting the tests of samples from the crime spots, especially in the cases where the bodies were badly decomposed, and this led to delays in the investigation process. The Haryana government has already sanctioned Rs 1.8 crore for starting the DNA unit in Madhuban from December. Besides the biology, ballistic, physics and chemical divisions, the lab would now soon start brain mapping and narco tests. It would also have equipment to deal with various kinds of cyber crime and DNA fingerprinting.
“The team headed by Rai visited various national-level labs, like Center for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, State Forensic Science Lab and Central Forensic Science Lab, all three in Hyderabad, Karnataka State Forensic Lab in Bangalore and Directorate of Forensic Science in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, recently,” said Dr MK Goyal, Director, Forensic Laboratory, Madhuban.
Apart from this, the lab is all set to wear a new look, with renovation work costing Rs 42.5 lakh going on. “Long processes are involved in forensic tests and that’s why it used to take months together before the final report could be released. Besides, there were times when the results of the sample tests would reach us after the entire investigation would get over,” he said.
He added that though the final go-ahead for DNA profiling has been given by the government, the nod for brain-mapping, narco-analysis test and computer forensic analysis were awaited. “A decision has also been taken up for setting up three regional forensic labs in Bhondsi, near Gurgaon, Hisar and Ambala. These will have four divisions each of toxicology, symbology, narcotics and photo division,” added said Goyal.
