Kolkata, April 17 The Cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, came up with the decision of setting up a Madrasa Service Commission today. The idea is to recruit teachers of 508 Madrasas, recognised by the government.

The state government, according to an official of the Minority Development Department, plans to recruit 1,000 madrasa teachers this year and 4,000 in the next three years.

"The commission will have five members, including the chairman and a bill will be introduced in the assembly in the next session,” said Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb.

The tenure of the chairman will be of four years and he should have profound knowledge of Islamic history and culture, according to the draft proposal.

In addition to the present 508 recognised madrasas, the government is also going to set up another 300 in the next 12 to 14 months.

This will be done either by recognising some of the existing kharezi (unrecognised) madrasas or by setting up new ones. The government has already given an option to kharezi madrasas to apply for the recognition.
