Malaria claims 4 more lives

Mumbai, July 19 Four more persons died due to malaria on Saturday in various city hospitals, taking the death toll due to rain-related illnesses to 54 since June. According to officials of the Health department, a 54-year-old man from Worli naka was admitted to the King Edward Memorial hospital in Parel with malaria on Friday morning. He died later the same day.

A 55-year-old resident of Kandivali was admitted to the Bhagwati hospital and treated for vivax malaria on July 17. He died a day later. A 55-year-old Worli resident died on Friday due to falciparum malaria at the Kasturba hospital. A 75-year-old woman hailing from Parel died at the Prince Ali Khan hospital due to vivax malaria .

Health officials of the BMC said that over 50,000 slides were inspected so far and precautionary measures were also taken. Currently, 177 persons with fever, 80 persons with gastroenteritis, 5 persons with leptospirosis, two with dengue and 49 persons with malaria were admitted to civic hospitals in the city.

According to sources, so far, as many as 2,898 persons are infected with malaria. Over 2,463 patients with vivax malaria and 243 patients with falciparum malaria have been treated successfully. “It is difficult for the BMC to inspect all overhead and loft tanks where the larvae breed,” said Dr Jairaj Thanekar, executive health officer.
