Kuala Lumpur, January 8: Malaysia has suspended the recruitment of workers from India and Bangladesh, the government said on Tuesday, in a move one official said could be linked to a recent uproar about Malaysia's treatment of ethnic Indians.

The ban, which took effect from Dec 31, 2007, could further strain relations between the two countries after some Indian politicians sympathised with ethnic Indians who said they have been marginalised by the Malay-majority government.

"The Cabinet decided about two weeks ago to freeze the intake of workers from India and Bangladesh," a Home Ministry official said.

Existing workers from the two countries would not have their work permits renewed, he said, adding that the ban applied to all categories of workers including professionals.

Other Ministry officials confirmed the ban but did not give a reason.

Indians make up about 8 per cent of the two million registered foreign workers in Malaysia. They are mainly employed in the construction, information technology and financial services industries in Malaysia.

Relations between India and Malaysia have been hurt by recent allegations of discrimination by the ethnic community in this Southeast Asian country.

Ethnic Indians held a mass anti-government protest in November, alleging that the authorities have sidelined the community because of an affirmative action policy that favours the majority ethnic Malays.

Some Indian politicians, including Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, expressed concern about the treatment of ethnic Indians in Malaysia.

Around 7 per cent of Malaysia's 26 million people are ethnic Indians, whose forefathers were brought to the Southeast Asian country as labourers by British colonial rulers.

screw the indian goverment by vishal on 09 Jan 2008

BRAVO MALAYSIA - whatever one may think abt them but one thing is certain. They know how to take a hard stance. Ofcourse you can't expect anything like this from our pathetic weakling spineless Indian Goverment. We are a big economic superpower a great military power ...we are a big blah blah blah ..blah blah blah and also blah. And yet, when push comes to shove we prefer to resolve all international crises involving us by licking the balls of others. Be it a giant like America or a pygmy like Nepal. We never take any forceful stand based on conviction but dilly dally on everything and anything. We have no guts no self esteem and thus despite this action by Malasia we will not take any effective counter measures against them because we are India - The world's ball lickers.

Mistakes of a small country like Malaysia by Vinod Narayan on 08 Jan 2008

Malayasia's discriminatory attitude to indians now comeout thru official policy statements which was earlier denied by their leaders. We should not bend towards them as we are marching ahead and within a decade our economy will be stronger. If they don't want indian expertise they will suffer we don't need their money. Small Countries will develop only if a multicultural environment exists otherwise it will go deep into crisis in all fields.

stop hate speech by diehard on 21 Jan 2008

stop this lousy talks about malaysia. we are indians from singapore. we hate such kinda of speech. You dont have a right to interfere into other countries issues. This is not gujrath or UP. unlike your spinless leaders hard decisions need to be made.

Policy Makers by Peter on 08 Jan 2008

Well, it is the policy maker not the Malay Muslims runs the government. This will be diffused in few days or weeks. It requires little bit of discussion between two governments; matters will be resolved bilaterally. No need to go for demonstration; however, profoundly expressing your views is not a bad idea. Such things happened here and there in these days of escalating conflicts. But mindful, Malaysia is never been a place for any riots or other mischievous acts taken place. Do not regard every thing in the perception of terrorism or making it Islamic movement. No it is fairly does not look like a jumble made by the Malaysian government. There must be strong evidence behind all those events. So wait till things become crystal clear.

India Should Respond by Vaseau on 08 Jan 2008

India, at the very least, should make the point that discriminatory moves against its nationals will be answered decisively. This signal from Malaysia is an opportunity to send out an unequivocal message to this and other failing nation states: India has self-respect, it can and will protect the interests of its people against all forms of discrimination, it has the ability to make its point through economic means. Anything less will only confirm the suspicion among myopic governments that Indians and people of Indian origin are pushovers

Need to re consider your decisios by arun on 08 Jan 2008

Necessarily back shot is not required, but before taking extreme decisions, one country should think about the history of bi lateral relationships that existed, existing and continued existence. Hope they lack proper advisory body in their government, that shows ill decisions. Need to re analyze the decisions, otherwise both the countries would have to loose something. More or less it would be the Malaysian govt. going to face the strong waves from all over the world for this kind of poor or ill advised decisions...Because of few incidents, we cannot cut of legs instead adopting curing measures....Malaysian wake up now before the entire world is going to go against you as India is not a small country like yours..

Great news emerged after the visit of AK Antony!!! by KMR Overseas on 08 Jan 2008

Instead of sending all-party delegation, UPA sent an evangelist(conversion expert) hence the result. Is it not the good occasion to ban Malaysian palm oil?

Ban Malaysia by Kumar on 08 Jan 2008

All those tourists please avoid Malaysia. Let this ban follow by Indian companies who import from Malaysia.

Silverlining for Indians by Hacharan Singh on 08 Jan 2008

It is a blessing for the Indians. There is not much wealth left in Malaysia, come 2011, Malaysia will be a net importer of oil and life is going to be more difficult. Twenty-two years of Mahathir's rule and the ridiculous affirmative action policy of discrimination based on one's religion had wiped off the oil wealth. Indians should endeavour to work in advance countries with small population and boost their economic growth rather than working in this ungrateful country. The working condition in the palm oil estate is so pathetic that even during the 1997 economic crisis, the Bangladeshi construction workers were willing to go back to their country rather than being redeployed to the estates. These estates are the domain of the Indians, made to slog and inhumanly exploited with cheap alcohol and expired can food!

Malayasian are not an Important country in an Inidian's eye by Avijit on 08 Jan 2008

Dear Malayasians friends, sooner you will understand for making India as your foe. Although you are a modern country but you are not so developed country where people will be mad to go. Please note , India is a country whom all the powerful nations of this Earth are wooing for being ally of them. India dont even count you as an important country except tourism. It is only we are helping Malayasian to build their infrastructure out of compassion but not out of any passion.

Think again Malaysia by Apoorva Mathur on 08 Jan 2008

Malaysia is illadvised in banning Indian workers including professionals and IP and finance space. It will only hurt their industry. If India were to take retaliatory measures, taking this action as a non-tariff trade barrier, they would lose further. This action is certain to have other side effects too including tourism which is Malaysia's biggest insdustry. Instead of working towards better integration of the people of Indian origin, this action would further exacerbate the situation.

boycott malaysian torism by amd on 08 Jan 2008

all modern citizens of the world should boycott malaysia as a tourist sestination.I will never ever go there and have advised all my friends to follow the same policy as well.

Counter-BAN by Anonymous on 08 Jan 2008

Well, India need not take a similar action, but "Indians" can! So, All Indians:1. Just stop going to Malaysia for tourism, go to Singapore, or anywhere else!2. Indian media should immediately stop playing the "Malaysia, truely Asia" advertisement for Malaysian tourism and not renew any Malaysian ads. If any channel or newspaper does project those, then citizens in India should oppose.3. Dont buy goods manufactured in Malaysia - for example DELL COMPUTERS!!! Once Dell sees losses in India, they will immediately take remedial action - may be they will then think of one more plant in INDIA !!! That would be a double benefit. Why these three...do anything, just let them know they cannot get away with this Jihadi fundamentalism even while running a legal UN recognized government, the case of terrorists is different.

Poor religious fundamentalist Govt. of malaysia don't understand the implications of it. They will suffer badly.
