Kuala Lumpur, May 15: A Malaysian opposition party's state headquarters was petrol-bombed overnight on Thursday, officials said, describing the attack as politically motivated.

Two men on a motorcycle flung explosives at the Democratic Action Party's (DAP) offices in the northern state of Perak, local party chairman Ngeh Koo Kam told reporters, citing a witness.

"No one was injured in the incident but the petrol-bomb explosions shattered windows on the top floor of our offices," Ngeh said.

"The incident was clearly an attempt to torch our party's office and we hope the culprits will be arrested soon," he added.

"I call on everyone to respect the people's decision in electing the DAP in Perak state," he added. DAP took control of Perak in March, the first time it has been in opposition hands, as the coalition which has led Malaysia since independence from Britain suffered a drubbing in parliamentary polls.

The mainly Chinese DAP is a member of Anwar Ibrahim's opposition alliance along with the former deputy premier's Keadilan and the Islamic PAS party.

National DAP leader Lim Kit Siang also condemned the attack and called for a thorough probe. "We deplore the action taken on our offices and want an immediate and full investigation to determine what happened and for the police to take action," he said.

City police chief Supt Idris Abdullah said no one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
