Kolkata, July 21: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she would abstain from voting during the confidence motion in Parliament on Tuesday.

"I'm not going to Delhi tomorrow. I cannot vote either for the BJP or Congress, nor in favour of CPI(M). Our line is to maintain equal distance from these parties," she told a party rally in Kolkata.

Banerjee said she had taken the decision after discussions within the party. "The common people are more concerned about sky-rocketing prices than the nuclear deal," said Banerjee who is Trinamool Congress's lone member in the Lok Sabha.

The party, she said, did not have any confidence in the UPA government which had failed to check the price rise. The government should have sought a fresh mandate over the nuclear deal.

She also criticised horse-trading reported among MPs prior to the trust vote. "What is going on is shameful. The Trinamool Congress cannot be purchased. We believe in principles."

Lady cannot make up her mind as elections are coming by Gautam on 22 Jul 2008

It is too clear that Mamata has only one principal - to criticise and oppose. She is too frightened to make up her mind as elections are coming and she doesnt even have the foresight for which alliance she wants to go to. No wonder she is rotting wherever she goes. Her win in WB recently was mainly for anti incumbency than for pro Mamata. What a waste of her votes and that too for free!!

JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT.....!!!!! by BABUBHAI PATEL USA on 22 Jul 2008

On what basis is Mamta for PM? by Gautam on 22 Jul 2008

Mamata has never shown decisiveness which is required for PM post (remember Indira Gandhi?) Even the seemingly sleeping PM PVR N Rao tactfully got Manmohan to go for the good decisions of liberalization. On what basis did you even dream Mamta as PM?

Hilarious.... by Curious on 22 Jul 2008

If the 'party' did not have any confidence in the UPA government which had failed to check the price rise, will not be more shameful not to vote against it at the 'confidence motion' ? But politicians and logic ? Yeah...

Bengal by XXX on 22 Jul 2008

Mamata Banerjee is even worse than Commies. Cann't Bengalis produce people like Subash Bose, Tagore etc. All the dirt is coming out from Bengal.

Productive bengalis are numerous and nameless these days by Gautam on 22 Jul 2008

The productive people of Bengal will be found as top level mgmt in industries or in academics/NASA/ISRO in all countries. They no longer believe in revolution in democracies. The more enterprising among them set up companies like Chatterjee group which enable more people to be more productive or set up institutes of higher learning or NGOs for tribals.

Voting by Goro on 22 Jul 2008

Politicians like Mamta Banergee are traitors when they decide not to vote because of their dislike of this party that party. The killing of N-deal is crucial for any patriotic person. When Indians have such politicians, there is really no hope for them to prosper as a proud independent people.

Just Strikes. by naresh on 22 Jul 2008

This lady Banerjee is only good for calling strikes to disrupt the normal life of normal people. By abstaining she is just sending a message that she either has no brains to take a stand or doesn't know what is happening in the country. To her, Bengal is her country where she can only fool innocent Bengalis.

Trust Vote by Dr. Sk. Musiar Ali on 22 Jul 2008

It is wright decision. At least her credibility is in no stake. She is not power crazy. she is the future of Bengal.

Retirement best option for Mamta by V.K.Menon on 21 Jul 2008

Mamta Banerjee and her trinamool show signs of fatigue. It is in the best interest of her and the people of Bengal, she retires from political life. Abstaining from such an important issue vote only shows her lack of interest. For or against she should have come to the parliament if she is to be considered as a serious politician. Well, she has few others in various camps who are unsure where they belong.
