Kolkata, September 15 Countering the Left Front’s pro-industrialisation rally in Singur on Monday, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will address a rally at Ground Zero on Tuesday.

The meeting that is scheduled for 2 pm, is expected to be attended by members of other political parties who are allies of the Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee, including the SUCI and the Naxals.

The Trinamool Congress had withdrawn its two-week-long dharna near the project site after signing an agreement with the state government.

Sources within the party said they believe that the government has violated the agreement that had been signed between the party and the protestors in the presence of Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Commerce and Industries Minister Nirupam Sen had signed the agreement on behalf of the state, while Partha Chatterjee was the signatory on behalf of the agitators.

“Banerjee, on the basis of her interpretation of the agreement, has said that 300 acres of land had to be returned to the unwilling farmers while the state government has alleged that the agreement does not specify the amount of land that has to be returned from the project area,” said a senior Trinamool leader.

Even during the meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on September 12, Banerjee could not arrive at a conclusion.

On the other hand, the state government as well as the National Highway Authority have not given permission to the Trinamool to hold Tuesday’s rally on the Durgapur Expressway.

“We told them that blocking the Expressway will inconvenience people. We suggested other alternative sites where many other parties, including the Trinamool, held rallies earlier. But they said they would go ahead with it. Let’s see what happens tomorrow,” said Raj Kanojia, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order).

Left Front chairman Biman Bose, meanwhile, in a statement condemned Trinamool’s decision. “They are flouting all laws. Their rally on Tuesday will be illegal. Their aim is to create anarchy,” the statement said. Banerjee, however, said their rally will be peaceful. “Our agitation will be democratic and peaceful. They are trying to smother us, but they won’t be successful,” Banerjee said.
